It seems like that was one of the points, that Atticus Finch defended Tom Robinson despite it NOT being the popular thing to do.

To say that he was grasping for the mantle of hero is ridiculous. He was pretty sure the case was lost when he took it, and still tried his hardest to defend him, because it was the right thing to do.

I think the relatively slow rise of it also goes quite a bit even before that.

Its just too darn high. Abortions amongst them too. Too many single moms realize its more welfare being single with a child.

'Out of wedlock' doesnt really 1:1 with single mothers per say, but it might be fairly close.

Interesting that the civil rights act was passed in 1964. So if you werent paying attention to any other factors, you could see that statistic and draw a correlation.
