Now, why it's become popular recently? I'm not sure. It's something of a threat--the losers in a revolution are usually killed--but I think it's essentially a bandwagon proposal. It's actually kind of fascist in a way, it's saying to join in our side as we're stronger and will win. And you want to win, don't you?

2018-09-09 21:58:00 UTC

But the left has gotten far more radical and far more activist lately, and it might be a part of it.

2018-09-09 21:59:05 UTC

Probably more symptom than cause. But there's a relationship there.

2018-09-09 22:00:16 UTC

it's an appeal to emotion, instead of reason.

2018-09-09 22:00:24 UTC

a bad way to argue.

2018-09-09 22:00:48 UTC

Well, maybe not a bad way, because it does work...

2018-09-09 22:08:36 UTC

It's the bandwagon effect.

2018-09-09 22:09:00 UTC

You also will notice they like to say the US is "behind" Europe on whatever issue they care about (like 'hate speech')

2018-09-09 22:17:37 UTC

Yep- US is so much behind Europe when it comes to suppression of free speach. You all should get your shit together and finally sentence someone for joke, without looking at context. Come on US- it isnt that hard

2018-09-09 22:34:40 UTC

On the social level we aren't really all that far behind. We fire and destroy people because of their thoughts or just our thoughts we project onto their words.

2018-09-10 18:18:06 UTC

Yes, we fire and destroy people's reputations, either for fun or profit or for politics--you can even hire people to do that crap to you. Also our civil courts, especially in family law, and our child protective services, are Orwellian.

2018-09-10 21:05:54 UTC

You'd run out of cops

2018-09-10 22:02:44 UTC

thought I'd share this article since Tim did a video about SErena Williams today

2018-09-10 22:03:05 UTC

actually

2018-09-10 22:03:06 UTC

hmm

2018-09-10 22:03:18 UTC

seems like CNN updated this article without telling people because the title seems slightly different

2018-09-10 22:03:38 UTC

didn't Tim share something that tracks news edits?

2018-09-10 22:06:49 UTC

newsdiffs

2018-09-10 22:07:09 UTC

excellent, let me check to see if this article has been changed

2018-09-10 22:07:45 UTC

actually, I found it on wayback machine

2018-09-10 22:08:10 UTC

nope, it says the same thing

2018-09-10 22:08:28 UTC

let's see if newsdiff says anything

2018-09-10 22:08:59 UTC

no change log. huh

2018-09-10 22:09:05 UTC

in any case

2018-09-10 22:09:32 UTC

both my girlfriend and I agree the title is worded to make it sound like Williams was fined _because_ she lost

2018-09-10 22:10:11 UTC

does it seem that way to you?

2018-09-10 22:32:42 UTC

nope

2018-09-10 22:57:52 UTC

Nah, it says she was fined for violations. It just says those violations were during the game which she lost.

2018-09-11 00:37:27 UTC

^

2018-09-11 02:14:38 UTC

Nah, dosent look like she was fined cause she lost

2018-09-11 11:03:35 UTC

"Serena Williams is fined $17,000 for violations during her US Open loss"

doesn't sound like she was fined for losing. Just that she committed violations during her match that ended up being her loss.

2018-09-11 11:07:45 UTC

there is not even a way i can rewrite that would read she was fined for losing. Unless it straight up read "She was fined 17,000 in violations for us open loss"
