That's how it's done already in states with voter ID as the law.

And it's not super easy to get one either, plus you have to sign up to vote.
You need a proof of citizenship (birth cert), money, proof of address _twice_, and fill out several forms.

Seems like Mastodon might be a better option since it isn't centralized.
The problem with Gab and Minds (and Twitter etc) is once they are taken down, that's it.
Mastodon (and other "federated" services) has like 1000 different instances.
Harder too censor, take down, and destroys the "we need to regulate tech" thing as anyone could just hop instance if they don't like the rules on one of them.
