And not understanding that you can have both. Humans are not binary creatures in the philosophical sense.
You are more than what you look like or what your wear or what you like doing.
The surface-only analysis that people are taught nowadays sucks. Because its not being taught correctly.
You look your best for a job interview because the interviewer doesn't know you personally, nor likely doesn't want to anyway. They're working a job and you want one. But it seems like people are taking that and running with it as a life long philosophy concerning interpersonal communication.
Tabula Rasa is at the end of a long road of self-introspection... but that only applies to you and your own thought process, not the rest of the world.
Tabula rasa in action: You are fat and decide to start losing weight. You spend years doing so and now enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle and an improved mental state. You look back at pictures of yourself being fat and wonder about how far you have come and how you could have ever let yourself get to that state of unhealthiness. You are reborn in the sense that the YOU that was is no longer the YOU that is, because you have literally altered your own thinking patterns by building atop the ruins of the old.
Tabula Rasa was meant as a statement of personal growth. It has long since been taken way out of proportion.
Then I could be completely wrong in my interpretation of it. My fault if I was.
Personal connections + a large amount of people simply talking and willing to still be cool despite disagreeing.

Solidarity doesn't have to mean blindly accepting that which you disagree with. You can and should call out your own side if they do some stupid shit.

With the fall of the skeptic community into bickering factions, he and everyone else on that Data Society graphic are the only folks willing to punch left as well as right.
Styx has been dealing with people on a solely "his rules" basis, and has never let up on that. He will walk away from something because he doesn't agree with it.
