To be fair the only reason Trudeau got elected (identity politics aside) was because he was at the time the lesser of two evils. The Harper Government (yes they renamed the government) did some pretty shady things.

2019-10-15 22:57:11 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Commenters note this guy referenced in Mad Max's tweet is in Victoria, BC.
https://twitter.com/MaximeBernier/status/1184158508213821440

2019-10-16 03:35:59 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Max is the only politician Iโ€™ve seen say โ€œthatโ€™s a provincial government jurisdictionโ€ re climate, education etc...

2019-10-16 17:46:48 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Warped common law is a big factor in the mess the UK is finding it's way into, I think.

2019-10-16 17:47:27 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

And I agree, Common Law is not a check against power and corruption.

2019-10-16 17:49:22 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

And Canada does have a constitution,

2019-10-16 17:50:11 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

It's literally called the Constitution Act.

2019-10-16 17:54:37 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I don't think the problem is necessarily in the constitution of Canada per sey, but the implementation of the branches of government is not ideal.

Executive and Legislative branches in Canada are the same house, and their power is almost entirely held in the PMO now.

2019-10-16 17:55:11 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Maybe this is what you are referring to

2019-10-16 17:55:29 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

how the US has clear separations of power between the 3 branches, and they all check and balance each other.

2019-10-16 17:55:48 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Doesn't help that our Judiciary is also appointed by the house/pmo etc..

2019-10-16 17:56:48 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I do quite like the fair representation of only 2 senators per state in the US. not a proportional rep based on population.

2019-10-16 17:59:18 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Also that senators are elected.. whereas ours are appointed, for life.

2019-10-16 17:59:50 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Ahh, yes I see your point. That is true.

2019-10-16 18:02:31 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I pipe dream of a PPC takeover, but I doubt it will happen. I fear things will need to get much worse before something like that happens.

2019-10-16 18:02:51 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Brexit is a good example of how bad things may get

2019-10-16 18:03:01 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

before people start paying attention.

2019-10-16 18:04:16 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I can't even vote for them now. My local candidate dropped out. Claimed that everyone they talked to would rather employ strategic voting to oust trudeau. Which is stupid, since we already were majority NDP in this riding.

2019-10-16 18:05:08 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I think you're right, it is 'almost' designed that way.

2019-10-16 18:05:58 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

In federal politics, out here in BC, most of us don't care.. since we don't have the population to matter. Even when they talk about the WEST in canada, they only mean Alberta/Sask/Manitoba.. nobody in Ottawa gives a damn about BC ๐Ÿ˜›

2019-10-16 18:07:25 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

aside: it's nice to have a place to discuss CA Politics.. people get so... weird when you try to talk about it.

2019-10-16 18:10:47 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-16 18:12:09 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

i think most people get a laugh out of their stereotypes... just not leftists ๐Ÿ˜›

2019-10-16 18:12:36 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

... tell me aboot it eh?

2019-10-16 18:13:40 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I've got some moose on the fire, the igloo is warm and my toque is dry. So i'm ready to listen to what you have to say. I even have some maple syrup on ice, oh shoot sorry, I should have asked, did you want some?

2019-10-16 18:13:55 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-16 18:15:44 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

haha, or they have very strong opinions ..strong enough to write a letter.

2019-10-16 18:17:17 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I think the damaging thing to the PPC, is the climate change point. If they defer the responsibility to provinces, they should do just that. Max sticking to his (accurate) talking point of how there is no climate crisis was... a mistake IMO.

2019-10-16 18:18:07 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Arguing against *them* that they're wrong is not effective.

2019-10-16 18:22:35 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

polarized too, it was never intended to be a 2 party system either.

2019-10-16 18:23:20 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

predictable, certainly. but not by design.

2019-10-16 18:24:51 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I was a fan of STV system.. where if your first choice wasn't chosen, you'd get a second vote for a backup choice.

2019-10-16 18:27:58 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I do agree wit that assessment.

2019-10-16 18:28:42 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

FPTP appears unfair, but I think it may be.. the most fair.

2019-10-16 18:29:15 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

that's the way to word it ๐Ÿ˜Ž

2019-10-16 18:30:02 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I suppose the issue is that people get upset that the party that forms majority is not always the popular party.. (eg. trump)

2019-10-16 18:30:18 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

but people forget that they only get a vote for their local MP.

2019-10-16 18:30:23 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

not anything else ๐Ÿ˜›

2019-10-16 18:31:32 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

IIRC you get to vote on president, but the elctoral college makes the real vote?

2019-10-16 18:33:05 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

@Shai'tan complicated... isn't it.

2019-10-16 18:33:28 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

@ShardS that change sounds like it was pretty damaging.

2019-10-16 18:33:38 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Sounds... unconstitutional

2019-10-16 18:34:15 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

ahh, damn, nothing to fallback on then.

2019-10-16 18:35:07 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

makes sense

2019-10-16 18:35:47 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I don't think I took a civics class.

2019-10-16 18:36:10 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

"Social Studies" was about as close as I came.. and we only talked about canadian politics for 6 months of my last year of high school.

2019-10-16 18:37:32 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

but educating people to think critically is coutner productive to the globalist and leftist agendas.

2019-10-16 18:38:13 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Sounds similar to our problem with Ontario and the rest of Canada.

2019-10-16 18:39:18 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Ontario. 95/282 seats for Ontario 75/282 seats for Quebec.

2019-10-16 18:40:13 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

60% of representatives come from 2 of 10 provinces and 3 territories.

2019-10-16 18:40:59 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

that's a good comparison!

2019-10-16 18:45:42 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

more if you include GTA, 3x that I think.

2019-10-16 18:46:22 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

6 million i think.

2019-10-16 18:46:39 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Canada is small in population ๐Ÿ˜‰

2019-10-16 18:46:45 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

37 million...

2019-10-16 18:46:49 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

that's what.. California?

2019-10-16 18:47:20 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

though our current immigration rate will see that go up by 1 million every 2.5 years :

2019-10-16 18:48:47 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Metro Vancouver is only 2.4 million, though I'm pretty sure 10 years ago it was 1.6 million ๐Ÿ˜

2019-10-16 18:53:00 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

distance, weather, and the cold.. big factors for that.

2019-10-16 18:53:50 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I think northern manitoba and ontario would be the worst places to be in the winter...

2019-10-16 18:54:07 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

those deep polar colds that form there are just.. insane.

2019-10-16 18:54:50 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I flew over Manitoba once in the winter.. everything was just.. white.. everything. ๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-16 18:56:58 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

An invasion of canada would be seen as nothing less than taking candy from a baby

2019-10-16 18:57:44 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

ahh, missed that

2019-10-16 18:57:49 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

fair enough.

2019-10-16 18:57:59 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I don't suspect the UK will save us ๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-16 18:58:30 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Population of Nova Scotia every 3 years.. yes.. that's going to have an affect.

2019-10-16 19:00:24 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

in 45 years, what is Canada now, will be a minority.

2019-10-16 19:00:30 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I don't think it'll even take that long.

2019-10-16 19:00:41 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

especially if they raise the rate to 500k/year

2019-10-16 19:01:33 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

damn, this is getting a bit depressing .. ๐Ÿ˜…

2019-10-16 19:02:21 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I would tend to agree.

2019-10-16 19:02:27 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

It won't be this election though, so maybe in 4 years.

2019-10-16 19:02:48 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I almost hope Trudeau wins.. so we can get this over with ๐Ÿ˜›

2019-10-16 19:02:52 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

_almost_

2019-10-16 19:03:58 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Although, with Brexit, and a pretty good chance of 2020 turmp, the turkish invasion.. .. and everything happening, things are already starting to crack.

2019-10-16 19:04:18 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

So, maybe major international issues will help the matter.

2019-10-16 19:04:47 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

props to Australia for seeing this coming long before... "Don't like it here, you can leave" ๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-16 19:05:40 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

So an NDP minority ๐Ÿ˜† // it happened in BC ๐Ÿ˜

2019-10-16 19:27:08 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I just don't understand how they can't see what Bernier points out.. They're almost the same party..

2019-10-16 19:27:17 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Scheer is like... Trudeau Light.

2019-10-16 19:27:33 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

But I guess that's enough.

2019-10-16 19:27:44 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Kinda like Trudeau was not Harper

2019-10-16 19:28:12 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Last election, I'd bet the NDP would have won if Jack Layton hadn't died.

2019-10-16 19:30:17 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Who do I vote for then @Settler's Lament ๐Ÿ˜

2019-10-16 19:30:26 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I have Lib, Con, Green, NDP as my options.

2019-10-16 19:31:36 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

vote liberal and hope trudeau loses his seat?

2019-10-16 19:33:36 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

is it now... not sure about that logic.

2019-10-16 19:34:01 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

i'll check it out

2019-10-16 19:34:02 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

thx

2019-10-16 19:40:29 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Typically I'd say failing to vote is a vote for the prevailing candidate.

2019-10-16 19:40:37 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I think you're right on this issue Shai'tan

2019-10-16 21:36:42 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I can agree to that, throwing your vote is no better than not voting.

2019-10-16 21:38:44 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

yes, lowering the voting age is a terrible terrible idea.

2019-10-16 21:41:18 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

Earn Citizenship? or just demonstrate a competence to have the right to vote

2019-10-17 02:01:59 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

@Settler's Lament I understand what you're getting at, but it doesn't work. Even if 50% of elgible voters abstained from voting, parliament would still be elected from the voters that DO vote. I dont' think it would be possible to convince the electorate to abstain from voting. As @Sydoh pointed out, if you DON'T vote, you defer your vote to those that DO vote.

I don't think there are even rules about a required minimum of voters that are required to consider the election valid.

What happens when only 10% of eligible voters vote.. I suspect, business as usual.

I don't disagree with you, Andrew Scheer and his party are NOT conservatives.
It's ridiculous, but the second best, and most realistic way for change to come to both the Lib/Con would be an NDP minority government. Which I do think would force another general election.

Obviously, best case scenario is a PPC majority, but we all know that's not very likely.

2019-10-17 02:03:25 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

@SkepticalWaves indeed, this globalist stuff was consipiracy theory 10 years ago. Maybe my unhinged Acoustics and Media teacher wasn't so unhinged after all...

2019-10-17 02:05:17 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

I'd have to say that Ottawa is doing a better job of this treason than the UK is ๐Ÿ˜› I seriously wonder what would happen if we held a referrendum on immigration

2019-10-17 02:11:27 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

๐Ÿคฃ

2019-10-17 02:14:19 UTC [Athens #ca_politics]

that is a very good point
