Anime elves then and now. The older show is Record of Lodoss War.

The show Record of Lodoss War was based upon an RPG tabletop game but the RPG elements were vague and blended into the action. RPG elements in shows and manga these days tend to be blatant and in-your-face about it such as with the "sent to another world" genre that grew tremendously.

@Ｗ　Ａ　Ｔ　Ｅ　Ｒ For the record, I enjoyed playing Nier Automata and I highly recommend it for its variety of gameplay. It is primarily 3rd person action but also has some old arcade style combat in certain segments. The setting is cool too.

@Ｗ　Ａ　Ｔ　Ｅ　Ｒ I also recommend reading the synopsis for the original Nier game. You don't have to play the original Nier to enjoy or understand Nier Automata but I recommend reading the synopsis first so that you know some of the lore first.

Also, remember that in order to get to Act 2, you have to go through Act 1 as two characters but don't worry. It is not repetitive and it adds to the gameplay mechanics.
