I understand that China is by far the biggest producer of those metals, and America is one of the biggest consumers. So why should we be concerned about protecting our steel/aluminum industries? I could see small tariffs on finished products, like foreign cars, computers, and electronics, which America makes a lot of. But our steel/aluminum companies can never hope to outstrip China in the long run, so why not encourage a transition from refining to manufacturing, domestically, and let China stay industrial and produce the materials which we can make more expensive, better stuff out of. China gets a customer, and we get cheap materials as we progress into our information economy. It seems a win/win, rather than the tariffs now where nobody’s really winning.

Tarriffs are more than just that. The tarrifs are semi punishing. And honestly we arnt hurting badly from them. To be honest everyone overhypes chinas economic power. They really arnt that strong.
