2017-12-08 19:12:01 UTC

Might be doxing myself, but Hema is worth it. Much better than sportsball.

Please explain what Hema is

Historical European Martial Arts

2017-12-08 19:15:32 UTC

^
Basically the martial arts of European warfare, with swords/axes/halberds/etc. Unlike SCA, HEMA requires actual blunt weapons , and you will fight in actual armour.

2017-12-08 19:31:29 UTC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYxQR5haqTs here is a 21v21 match, more of a strength battle. 1 vs 1 has much more tecnhique usually.

2017-12-08 19:42:09 UTC

Another good video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4k-vjdeZO4 of 1v1 techniques.

I have a full BOTN rig being made @The Eternal Anglo

2017-12-09 01:09:10 UTC

Beautiful helmet! Hopefully with money being saved up I can buy a nice heavy armour suit @Deleted User

2017-12-09 01:44:44 UTC

Go fight for M1!!

2017-12-09 02:02:12 UTC

@The Eternal Anglo buy pre-made if you can buying custom from armorers takes forever for it to get built

2017-12-09 05:16:34 UTC

@The Eternal Anglo sca does help with alot of things though I've seen alot of guys do Hema and sca there are tons of interchangeable skills

2017-12-10 19:26:39 UTC

Really cool concept but those guys lacked any form of drill

2017-12-10 22:19:25 UTC

What is the sport/league that is more like fencing but with medieval swords?

2017-12-10 23:36:37 UTC

Hmm.

2017-12-10 23:36:45 UTC

I know Swordfish does a tournament

2017-12-10 23:36:56 UTC

League? I dunno

2017-12-11 02:35:50 UTC

Pretty sure that's Hema

2017-12-11 02:43:50 UTC

Full contact stick stick fighting

2017-12-14 17:33:54 UTC

The irish used to have a stick fighting martial art, mostly because they don't have much iron on the island.

2017-12-14 17:48:39 UTC

`Originally known as the Irish: bata, or stick, the name shillelagh is an Anglophone corruption (phonological adaptation) of the Irish sail รฉille and appears to have been associated with the name of the village and barony of Shillelagh, County Wicklow.[2][3] The shillelagh was originally used for settling disputes in a gentlemanly manner โ€” like a duel with pistols or swords. Modern practitioners of bataireacht study the use of the shillelagh for self-defense and as a martial art. Of the practice, researcher J. W. Hurley writes:

Methods of shillelagh fighting have evolved over a period of thousands of years, from the spear, staff, axe and sword fighting of the Irish. There is some evidence which suggests that the use of Irish stick weapons may have evolved in a progression from a reliance on long spears and wattles, to shorter spears and wattles, to the shillelagh, alpeen, blackthorn (walking-stick) and short cudgel. By the 19th century Irish shillelagh-fighting had evolved into a practice which involved the use of three basic types of weapons, sticks which were long, medium or short in length.[4]`

Irish HEMA.

2017-12-14 23:39:20 UTC

Stick fighting with Hema techniques are superior

2017-12-15 00:38:04 UTC

"Practical" If you don't carry a side-sword on you at all times you aren't white

2017-12-15 01:04:58 UTC

I like the one with the morning star. Fucking sick.

2017-12-15 04:03:09 UTC

@StrawberryArmada all techniques are interchangeable

Wear your armor 24/7 so you can properly adjust.

2017-12-19 01:52:56 UTC

That photo is fake.

2017-12-19 01:53:04 UTC

Women don't dress like that anymore, silly

2017-12-28 06:51:30 UTC

Can anyone recommend a good website for purchasing well made sturdy renaissance era swords? I'm a fencer looking for a good side sword or rapier.

2017-12-29 04:38:42 UTC

In one of those videos, a guy was swinging a fuggin hammer. Take one to the head and you'll die bro

2017-12-29 05:08:53 UTC

I only spar with hammers and heavy maces

2017-12-29 05:17:53 UTC

Decent stuff from lots of category

2017-12-29 05:19:19 UTC

These guys make great rapiers

2018-01-03 00:03:19 UTC

@Deleted User REALLY delayed response, but the combat looks really cool. There's just no military drill. They'd do much better with some line discipline

2018-01-14 17:04:06 UTC

This wiki collects primary source materials on European martial arts

2018-01-14 17:08:27 UTC

Skip to 2:00 to see some awesome techniques

2018-01-14 17:17:35 UTC

Rapier and dagger is cooler but longsword is nice too

2018-01-29 02:58:34 UTC

If anyone is interested in HEMA and would like to see it first hand you can find an event near you here.

2018-01-29 15:36:32 UTC

@StrawberryArmada do they have a search feature or do I just scroll?

2018-01-29 15:55:14 UTC

I don't believe they do, but you can use the "find on page" function to lookup your area

Does anyone know of a brand or company that sells swords for movie props? Working on a project where I will need some and if possible I'd like for them to look real and not heavy.

2018-02-07 22:59:11 UTC

Thought you guys might be able to help

Something similar to this.

2018-02-09 22:41:12 UTC

Honestly I've only ever dealt in useable swords

2018-02-09 22:41:34 UTC

I can probably check if some armories I know of do props

2018-02-10 00:50:30 UTC

That'd be awesome thanks @StrawberryArmada

2018-05-11 04:43:39 UTC

If you live in Wyoming

2018-05-11 04:43:56 UTC

There's a very important upcoming bareknuckle event

2018-05-11 04:44:32 UTC

Gillette, WY, on June 23, 2018

2018-05-11 04:53:19 UTC

2018-05-19 21:16:20 UTC

Any fencing nibbas in here?

2018-05-19 22:08:57 UTC

Fencing sounds cool, Iโ€™ve been meaning to try it

2018-05-21 02:39:44 UTC
2018-05-21 02:39:59 UTC

Yeah, I want to get into it, but it's expensive.

2018-05-21 02:40:00 UTC

Not as much as I've done other things but I've dabbled in fencing

2018-05-21 02:40:21 UTC

I know you a knightly nibba

2018-05-21 02:40:34 UTC

If you have a local SCA chapter they do fencing exceptionally well

2018-05-21 02:40:53 UTC

I know SCA is doing an event in Denver on October 12th

2018-05-21 02:41:04 UTC

But beware they will try to get you to lace up lol

2018-05-21 02:41:43 UTC

@Deleted User good place to gather techniques. It's a good place to learn fencing in general

2018-05-21 02:42:44 UTC

@Deleted User try kult of athena they have alot of stuff for a variety of needs relatively cheap

2018-05-25 18:06:35 UTC

Avoid Cold Steel products

2018-05-25 18:06:40 UTC

not very good

2018-05-28 01:43:46 UTC

@StrawberryArmada Nothing wrong with Cold Steel. Most of their stuff is pretty good.

2018-05-28 01:44:01 UTC

Ehhh. For fencing

2018-05-28 01:44:06 UTC

I wouldn't trust em

2018-05-28 01:46:06 UTC

They don't make any fencing stuff. Most of their actual knives and other blades are pretty good.

2018-05-28 02:18:01 UTC

I dunno. I've only ever seen their swords

2018-05-28 02:18:16 UTC

It's a lot easier to mess up a sword

2018-05-28 02:20:16 UTC

Their sword handles are notoriously flimsy
