Helicopter coming in to refuel at an HAA. I hope fuel becomes a thing in SQUAD at some point otherwise helicopters will be constantly flying over the operational area without needing to refuel.
Ooof probably nope
@Kooijpolloi do you know if the koevoet uniforms were the same cut as the sadf browns?
If so that'll make life far easier for me
Lol
Koevoet sometimes fought in civvies
But yes they wore standard browns for most the war tho
I know they wore browns too. Just wondering whether their camouflage uniforms were the same as the browns just in a camo pattern that way I don't have to sculpt two different uniforms. Just one that has two different textures, one nutria and one koevoet camo.
The camo pants were long pants but they sometimes cut them short
Since it gets fuck hot in a casspir
Read this book btw
Very good
I'll see if I can get it at some point
There is that same palm symbol again
Any pic descriptions?
I'm going to include various insignia and symbols on SADF vehicles too where they were historically such as the 61 mech logo on 61 mech Ratels
It probably had one but finding it again is a mission
Hmmmm never seen it before
Might be SWATF
What base is that in the background in the first pic it looks very familiar
Oshakati?
I've seen that same base in several reference images. Maybe Ondangwa?
Oshakati also had a similar tower
With an AA gun on it
At the top of that tower is a double 23mm yes
Concrete one was called alpha tower I believe.
Hmmm yes
Twin mags... wouldn't want to be on the receiving end
How the hell did they fire both at the same time...
One hand on each
I suppose?
Nope
Its connected to a spoon trigger
They had one with 3 Mags
I'll have to do my research on that then as I'll be including dual mags, 30s and 50s
On casspirs and buffels.
They put just about anything layong around on the vics
.50s with a mag
All types of shit
The Hispano is a classic
Early OD and later camo. Don't see many pics of the OD though as I know it was very early on in the war
Hispano 20mm right?
That will be terrifying for those up against the SADF as they won't know whether the Casspir ahead has a 20mm, dual 50's, 30's or a single mag or nothing ๐
Yrah no lol
And of course players will hopefully be able to fire from the casspir or buffel too. So almost a dozen guns just on a single vehicle
Squad leader role will definitely have a stache.
This is an interesting image. Milan atgm?
Yes
Milan 1
Look at this... https://pin.it/cwdpwxi7dc4k7x
Lol looks like a pokkel
This is not South African
Just a cool armored car
Pimp my Ford model t
i want to go buy a casspir
i saw a privately owned one once in plettenberg bay and it was neon orange with black jagermeister logos on the sides it looked pretty epic
@Bartender there is a company that sells casspirs to the civilian market IIRC
Amazing book
Yeah there is a place in Lynnwood called R21 Trucks they sell them cheap and they sell unimogs
So much information about SADF and SAP vehicles
I don't want to know what the fuel consumption is. I can just imagine it being incredibly uneconomical for your average middle class South African
Big bonus though! You'll never get hijacked
When buy one of them do you really expect good milage?
Driving into SPAR parkinglot and park in front of tops with that.... priceless......
And then getting out with flipflops
Yes as it has a massive fuel tank. But filling that fuel tank isn't wallet friendly
100 bucks at a time
So apparently Koevoet would operate with 4 casspirs per squad
Two with 7.62 and the other two with either 50's or 20mm's.
As well as a blesbok
I vote dual 50s
On them all
๐
Dual 20mm's ๐ฆ
Don't think that was done though
Now you are speaking my language
There's a pic of a casspir with a milan 1 atgm set up in place of a machinegun
Just as good
This will probably happen a lot.
As it already does in vanilla SQUAD.
Cubans training FAPLA on an ags-30? I wonder whether OWI will ever implement these as well as the US counterpart the mk19
That would be amazing
Hay just wanted to say for everyone that played in the last Rm event i am busy rendering my 1 hour long ish video
Lekker! I'll watch it on the drive home sometime after the 22nd.... days are going slow now that there is less work
lekker
1st pic green pat 83 webbing. 32bn and recce exclusive irrc?
Seen here too
Good news everyone mugabe is finally dead !!!
I heard
@Bartender dunno what difference it mqkes now lol
Me neither but its still good news
Spitefull ones last the longest....
or till 95 at least....
oofer gang
Rare pics of cuban personnel in Angola.
Looks like an RPD?
Ardvaark... when a Ratel and a Rooikat make a baby.
Looks like a modernised saracen
Anyone able to find a high res of that?
i know a page on instagram sells a poster of that so they must have a high res image
is this better @Springbok
G3 were used by the marines right?
@Kooijpolloi yup SAMC used them
@Bartender slightly better, shot bru
no problem mate
SAMC and the recces yoused them when they were behind enemy lines doing spec op missions
but they were dreadfull to use apparently
Ive never heard if a recce using the G3
SA Marine aiming with a g3
Recce? Using G3? Or marine?
a recce
if you go read the book salute the eagle he writes about it
but the marines also used it yes
both branches hated the rifle
@Bartender what was wrong with it?
SAND
well everything rattled and as kooij said its was more prone to fouling than the FAL
the quality of the R#s we got were crap at best
G3s*
Ah alright makes sense as SWA was quite sandy. Though the R4 was adopted to replace the R1 for the same reason as far as I recall? The R4 handled sand far better than the R1.
This thing always intrigues me whenever I see it... no idea what they were thinking when they designed it. ๐ค
looks like they were trying a new replacement for the buffel that wasnt the casspir or ratel
it look like they took a buffel body and made i longer with added armor
pretty much an enclosed buffel with a ratel cockpit
In end the Buffel Mk II won out then. As this was used in the townships iirc.
id love to own one and then just make it a flatbed instead of the apc
Ah the buffel platbak
Pic of it in that $700 book...
but ill keep the armored part for when shit hits the fan
The Swerwer
That looks so ugly
Similar to the Rhodesian Leopard in my opinion
well it is basically the south african leopard
its really a shame that all those vehicles are either rusting aaway in some sandf museum or already scrapped
WTF all of these vehicle's looks so ugly hoe designed these lol
The jhb war museum keeps their vehicles in working condition if possible.
War they were designed to function. Not to look good ๐
Function over form is the name of the game.
Looks like a little weeny mouse that you can just smoosh and dead
That's the first production Ratel I believe in the JHB museum of military history
ahh the ratel 20
SADF troops alongside Angolan FAPLA.
Hope to see ratels lined up like this waiting for the match timer to reach 0 as we do in vanilla SQUAD with US or Russian logis and APC's.
Hey Springbok, would you perchance have any pictures of the AWB in their camo uniform? Can't find many good pictures and when I do they're dressed in boomer attire.
Check pinterest
Looks like the Tank Encyclopedia illustrations
Ja
A lot of vehicles i have yet to model ๐ฟ๐ฆ
Except for the Buffel, eland, Ratel and G6
Pinterest doesn't have anything, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion though!
From pinterest
Closest one of the camouflage uniform I could find
Weird, it didn't show up when I searched for the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging
Thanks very much!
I think this guy could force the ANC out by sitting on them
Ja he's had too many koeksisters.
A lot of firepower in one picture...
Same with this one
Pity the Rooivalk wasn't around during the war. Would have been a very valuable asset
MPLA's old flag design. They changed to the cog and panga sometime during the war iirc.
๐ฆ๐ด
UNITA I don't know what they were thinking... kak flag design
I've got an original Angolan flag coming in soon, except mine is the one they still use today
Lekker! Its a cool looking flag to be fair
1976 when the bren was still in use
Indeed! I'm glad HAH could hook me up with it
HAH?
High Adventure History, he makes a lot of Rhodesian themed patches (as well as others), and he sells various flags and military bits he finds
He selects which patches he sells via polls on his Instagram
Ah nice where's he based?
Galveston, Texas.
In November he's going to have an all-Rhodesian patch poll in honor of UDI
I believe his last patch was that blue Congo one
Sounds mint! How the hell did he get ahold of an original Angolan flag...
No idea, he tends to just get a hold of things, he's definitely worth adding on Instagram if you like cool stuff.
Definitely got these before the embargo ๐
I'd pay a killing on customs though since I am not based in the US
True. I know he ships patches internationally all the time so those can't be too bad cost-wise
Buffel seen better days...
F
Captured during Op Protea. Checking out a soviet helm?
Wonder whether this is actual combat or an exercise.
Is it just me or is that a scope on a vickers? Description of this pic says its in a guntower at kutima mulilo
32Bn with modified Unimogs... interesting.
Rhodies had the same setup
These okes must have had some lekker biltong for awhile after.
The scope on the vickers is real it was operated like that to have accurate fire out to 1km away which was quite easily achieved by the vickers and as for the picture where you ask about training or real combat it is a training exercise, photos or cameras for that matter werent allowed in the operational area but exercises were photographed
Those are 106mm recoilless rifles on the mogs
Hmm im thinking the picture of the combat area might also be a demonstration in a township maybe ? Or it could be an aftermath of a battle that occured ? Only thing throwing me off is the fact that all the ratels are so closely parked together
This Ratel upgrade looks fokken mint
It looks more like theyre setting up a temp base or getting ready to go out on a operation
Ja doesn't look like a battefield to me
I wonder if theyre still using oerlikon 20mm's on it or if they switched to the bushmaster 25mm
๐ ฑ oerlikon 20mm
I think still 20mms
It looks like a 20mm
Ratel 20 after all
Its probably still the oerlikons then
It has thicker armour
Cool little bit of info about a friend of my dads, his father actually helped to translate the swedish manual for the oerlikon into afrikaans and he helped construct the first training guide for it, he also worked with armscor/denel on optimising the gun for south african use
Must be loaded then? Those okes usually are
Not at all really
This was wayy back in the 60s or 70s and he still just got regular army pay
9 days and my working season is over! Back to modeling for Op Savannah soon lads!
It'll be glorious! Between this and the Armscor mod I'm so hyped!

Psst Rhodesian Bush War is also being planned on but I'm very quiet about that as my primary focus is on the Border War. Cool thing is many assets can be reused such as the Alouette, Eland, R1 and more.
Long as you don't bite off more than you can chew, I'll be happy with anything related to either war. Shame they're so forgotten in the west.
It's far easier to make content for SQUAD than it is for ARMA. So don't worry about that
Really? Why's that?
UE4 is very userfriendly
Is ArmA running on an old-ass engine, or was that a different game I'm thinking of?
ARMA 3's modding tools are pretty difficult to learn and use in comparison to UE4. Far more tutorials out there for the latter too
And yes ARMA 3's engine is built off of an engine developed in the late 90's. First game that used that engine was Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis
Released in 2001
I have yet to find a picture of an R1 with a wooden handguard. Which leads me to believe there weren't any?
I have no such pictures in my collection either. Maybe ask Dana?
Sure will do although I believe he was in the SADF with the R4 already in use. As the R4 was adopted in 1980 iirc.
The R1 is seldom seen in pics during the 80's
Oh yeah he served later on, but he's still the best person to ask that I know of
Ja
I believe he was in in the '90s
When you've got gyppo guts...
You gotta do what you gotta do...
Some troops wore shorts but not as common as our Rhodesian brothers.
Serious question, wouldn't shorts be a problem as they'd let your leg get all scratched up, or is that just a problem I've had in my particular environment?
SQUAD already has an FN FAL but it isn't the same variant as the R1. I'll have to model the R1 as a consquence. No problem though. I'm going to cheat a little and use the SQUAD FN FAL as a base to model over.
Ja shorts were a bad idea. Not just for the notorious haak n steek (thorn bushes) but sunburn too
Why did the Rhodesians wear them, then? Cost effectiveness?
Likely just preference. Rhodesians didn't fancy trousers in the blistering heat and humidity. Probably considered the thorn bushes as worth the risk for the increased airflow and thus comfort of shorts.
Rhino G6-45
Love this photo... a South African will improvise a braai regardless of the circumstances he finds himself in.
Sexy G6
No braai? Fuck that lets braai on a spade.
I'd love to have the ability to load rounds directly into the G6 as seen here. But definitely not something I'd include in the initial release of the G6 in OPS.
I can imagine pressing F to pick up a projectile. It then pops into your hands and you run over to the back. Press F again to pop it into the G6. Load and fire...
Now imagine doing it IRL when some commies need some hate dropped on them from the next ZIP code over
I won't have a full interior for the G6 though as I have no reference of the interior.
