2019-04-11 08:30:04 UTC

its been a project at least 2 years in the making

2019-04-11 08:30:27 UTC

the amount of people 'deserving credit' for this achievement is literally staggering

2019-04-11 08:30:54 UTC

like I live in the shadow of an observatory and the local news is cheering all the work done there

2019-04-11 08:31:03 UTC

and they are just one of dozens of observatories that worked on this project

2019-04-11 08:31:19 UTC

they are literally pointing to a crowd of people and saying 'that one is the best'

2019-04-11 08:31:23 UTC

then arguing about it

2019-04-11 08:36:20 UTC

People need to calm down over something that equates to doing a human flag. Fucking hard. Years of work goes into it. Looks cool. Entirely pointless.

2019-04-11 08:42:12 UTC

To be fair though, having so many contributions to men's rights does harm your reputation on reddit. That's why I've purged all my contributions to the majority of "undesirable" subs. It allows me to engage in debate without them throwing my post history back in my face.

2019-04-11 08:43:39 UTC

That's what having multiple accounts is for... RSN is my 'don't give a fuck' account

2019-04-11 08:45:03 UTC

I have another that is purely for things related to work, one that is only related to hobbies, and one that is only for mobile.

hi guys...

2019-04-11 20:48:23 UTC

Heya, welcome

2019-04-11 20:50:03 UTC

I didn't knew much about the mrm until last month.

2019-04-11 20:51:20 UTC

was kind of oblivious about it just like all of my friends.

2019-04-11 20:55:10 UTC

I have read a lot of content on gender lately and I felt like I need to support the mrm and maybe do something for the movement. :)

2019-04-11 20:59:41 UTC

Welcome @jamieM

2019-04-11 21:01:10 UTC

That's cool

2019-04-11 21:03:37 UTC

That's great @jamieM we are also doing a project for MRM as a discord group.

2019-04-11 21:04:59 UTC

It's a website for 'The best introduction to MensRights' done in an faq format.

2019-04-11 21:08:06 UTC

That's great.. I guess that's the most important thing needed right now for the movement.

2019-04-11 21:11:00 UTC

There has been a lot misconceptions about the movement. I guess the most important thing is to have a platform to clear it up.

Hello MRAs and fellow fans of MRAs

2019-04-12 00:18:48 UTC

I like the character Ray Donavon from the show by the same name

2019-04-12 00:20:31 UTC

But also I dislike it when people who can't drive honk their horn

2019-04-12 00:26:34 UTC

Same.

2019-04-12 01:08:30 UTC

Reddit is running a Game of Thrones betting pool on who will win the Iron Throne

2019-04-12 01:17:53 UTC

I think it will be Sarah Connor

2019-04-12 01:18:04 UTC

Blonde Sarah Connor

2019-04-12 01:31:23 UTC

Brienne?

2019-04-12 01:39:43 UTC

?

2019-04-12 01:40:34 UTC

Cersei

2019-04-12 01:41:00 UTC

The actress played Sarah Connor in "Terminator, the Sarah Connor Chronicles".

2019-04-12 01:41:22 UTC

Remember, with the cute little chick terminator played by Summer glad

2019-04-12 01:41:27 UTC

GLAU*

2019-04-12 01:43:46 UTC

2019-04-12 01:45:44 UTC

oh

2019-04-12 01:45:53 UTC

wait seriously?

2019-04-12 01:46:16 UTC

that means both Cersei and Daenyrus have played Sarah Connor

2019-04-12 01:48:39 UTC

Yep seriously

2019-04-12 01:48:51 UTC

She was a brunette in the series though

2019-04-12 01:49:11 UTC

I forgot Deanyrus played Sarah Connor

2019-04-12 01:49:58 UTC

It was a really good show

2019-04-12 01:50:16 UTC

I think it fell victim to that writers strike back in the late 2000s

2019-04-12 01:50:27 UTC

yeah it did

2019-04-12 01:50:38 UTC

Stupid writers strike

2019-04-12 01:50:56 UTC

well it was really important... for writers

2019-04-12 01:51:07 UTC

I get it but I really miss that show

2019-04-12 01:51:14 UTC

they were basically being subjected to systemic theft

2019-04-12 01:51:18 UTC

yeah

2019-04-12 01:51:23 UTC

its unfortunate it had to happen

2019-04-12 01:51:43 UTC

I dont blame the writers

2019-04-12 01:52:54 UTC

I also miss the Stargate series though that just ended due to the way against good sci-fi

2019-04-12 01:53:18 UTC

Back when the sci-fi channel changed to Syfy and stopped having good sci find

2019-04-12 01:53:22 UTC

Sci fi*

2019-04-12 01:53:55 UTC

well the people that own and manage Syfy at the executive level are just... not science fiction people

2019-04-12 01:54:08 UTC

Yeah

2019-04-12 01:54:09 UTC

its why Sci Fi had that period where it showed a lot of pro wrestling?

2019-04-12 01:54:17 UTC

Yeah lol

2019-04-12 01:54:19 UTC

because one of the executives loved pro wrestling

2019-04-12 01:54:22 UTC

And really bad sci fi movies

2019-04-12 01:54:28 UTC

yeah

2019-04-12 01:54:54 UTC

Like this one where the sun momentarily became a magnetar, which magnetized Mercury and flight it at the Earth.

2019-04-12 01:55:07 UTC

Flung it *

2019-04-12 01:55:28 UTC

right, because Mercury is made of metal

2019-04-12 01:55:44 UTC

And they sent rocket ships to go get it or something.

2019-04-12 01:56:03 UTC

I was so mad when they started ruining sci-fi

2019-04-12 01:56:35 UTC

I actually really like this Canadian channel now called Space

2019-04-12 01:56:54 UTC

they have been making some really good original sci-fi shows, that Syfy usually picks up for showing in the US

2019-04-12 02:00:24 UTC

I'm just glad there is a Star trek series now

2019-04-12 02:00:35 UTC

Even if they did screw up the klingons a bit

2019-04-12 02:05:50 UTC

Remember when 43" was a really big tv

2019-04-12 02:08:00 UTC

I've never kept track

2019-04-12 02:20:55 UTC

2019-04-12 03:44:17 UTC

I remember when 17" was big

2019-04-12 04:17:19 UTC

2019-04-12 04:59:03 UTC

morning

2019-04-12 05:25:56 UTC

I'm so bored I feel like hand soldering a BGA would be fun...

2019-04-12 05:43:49 UTC

what's a BGA?

2019-04-12 05:50:37 UTC

Ball Grid Array, it's where all of the pins of a chip are in a grid on the bottom side of the chip instead of the outer edges

2019-04-12 05:51:26 UTC

you ARE bored.

2019-04-12 05:52:02 UTC

Either you use hot air, bake, or create a via grid to hand solder them one by one...

2019-04-12 05:53:18 UTC

stick it in the oven.. with cookies. for the neighbours you don't like. those things can't be healthy

2019-04-12 05:53:59 UTC

Eh, I've breathed enough flux smoke I'll probably die of cancer... if the cigarette smoking doesn't do it.

2019-04-12 05:54:48 UTC

it's a toss up.

2019-04-12 05:55:04 UTC

According to the state of California... I'll get cancer from my garden hose too

2019-04-12 05:55:10 UTC

I have to go...

2019-04-12 05:56:23 UTC

well you shouldn't have waterd the plants then... which probably also give you cancer..

2019-04-12 06:31:46 UTC

'they' have created a wikipedia page for Katie Bouman

2019-04-12 06:31:52 UTC

its only a few days old

2019-04-12 06:32:10 UTC

doesn't even have an accurate date of birth on it

2019-04-12 07:18:46 UTC

It also says it wasn't her algorithm that was used in the end, but I can't find any evidence that it's true

2019-04-12 07:51:47 UTC

Why are people so dense when it comes to a basic understanding of math...

2019-04-12 07:51:59 UTC

I want to beat my head on my desk

2019-04-12 07:52:59 UTC

Have to love that fake narrative "94-98% of rape allegations are legitimate"

2019-04-12 11:35:10 UTC

And when you bring up that that's not true they say "well, murder has very few false accusations" and wow. They don't get that you basically need a body to prove a murder. Lol

2019-04-12 11:36:47 UTC

i really don't get the number of false rape accusations. i mean, the judicial system has always been on a "innocent until proven guilty" basis, yet there seem to be a lot of men that go to prison without having done anything. wtf how can you have proof of something that didn't happen

2019-04-12 11:39:03 UTC

do you mean people that are held for long periods or people that are convicted falsely

2019-04-12 11:40:23 UTC

most violent offenses (which rape is considered) are held in prison until they go through court

2019-04-12 11:42:32 UTC

i was talking about wrongful convictions, but the power to send a man to prison until the court date by just going to the police is also a bit much imo

2019-04-12 11:43:03 UTC

its meant to be for public safety

2019-04-12 11:44:39 UTC

yeah, i get that, but there should be some verifications don't you think?

2019-04-12 11:45:16 UTC

there should, its a perfect example of abusing an unfair system

2019-04-12 11:45:34 UTC

exactly

2019-04-12 11:46:13 UTC

plus if a man accuses a woman of rape i really doubt she would be getting into hold immediately

2019-04-12 11:48:33 UTC

TGIF

2019-04-12 11:48:39 UTC

time to get a drink

2019-04-12 11:53:55 UTC

I don't really have a problem with people being held in custody when charged with violent crimes. I just want that standard to be applied equally, and if it can be proven without doubt that the accuser made it up, they should face harsh punishment for depriving that person of their liberty

2019-04-12 11:55:36 UTC

@InsaneCaterpilla could always open up a civil suit

2019-04-12 11:56:03 UTC

imprisoning someone isn't going to help, lost money might

2019-04-12 11:57:01 UTC

People can rely on others for their lifestyle. They can't do that in prison

2019-04-12 11:57:11 UTC

yeah, but the taxpayers man

2019-04-12 11:58:13 UTC

I'm a supporter of a good prison system, and personally don't mind that my taxes go toward keeping prisoners alive and reforming them to be positive contributors to society.

2019-04-12 11:59:02 UTC

what happens if that person will never be a contributor to society or a net drain?

2019-04-12 11:59:38 UTC

Then that is a failing of society, not just the individual

2019-04-12 11:59:51 UTC

perhaps

2019-04-12 12:00:16 UTC

do you believe in capital punishment?

2019-04-12 12:00:22 UTC

No

2019-04-12 12:00:44 UTC

but life sentence is fine?

2019-04-12 12:02:43 UTC

Being in prison the rest of your life, to me, is worse than death, but I feel its's acceptable because a society shouldn't murder its own members unless it can help it. The death penalty can be abused and the innocent cannot reclaim their lives.

In the above I'm assuming you mean a life sentence means life, as the majority of the time it doesn't.

2019-04-12 12:03:11 UTC

yeah, because the thing is

2019-04-12 12:03:23 UTC

I support capital punishment but in certain cases only

2019-04-12 12:03:47 UTC

the reason why people don't support capital punishment is because of the way its handed out

2019-04-12 12:04:34 UTC

i don't support it because the judge and jury are people and they make mistakes

2019-04-12 12:05:06 UTC

There are all kinds of things that can be done to reform criminals into useful, positive people, and although I am not removing blame from people for the actions they choose to commit, to a certain extent society has produced this person

2019-04-12 12:05:07 UTC

I have trust in my country's judicial system

2019-04-12 12:05:16 UTC

but in other country's ones

2019-04-12 12:05:17 UTC

not so

2019-04-12 12:05:48 UTC

it's not about trust, it's about people making mistakes which can and does happen

2019-04-12 12:06:04 UTC

what about corporal punishment, or public shaming

2019-04-12 12:06:08 UTC

sure, but what happens if its beyond a doubt

2019-04-12 12:06:15 UTC

I come from singapore

2019-04-12 12:06:20 UTC

we're famous for caning people

2019-04-12 12:06:32 UTC

but nobody questions the process because we're rigourous on it

2019-04-12 12:06:56 UTC

it is supposed to be beyond reasonable doubt, but even in good systems mistakes happen

2019-04-12 12:07:07 UTC

and a capital punishment is not a mistake that can be fixed

2019-04-12 12:07:22 UTC

yes, that's why even in singapore, we don't dish it out regularly

2019-04-12 12:09:08 UTC

people think we cane everyone or we hang every single drug trafficker we lay our hands on

2019-04-12 12:09:10 UTC

that's incorrect

2019-04-12 12:09:20 UTC

plus death row in the us is gendered

2019-04-12 12:09:29 UTC

98% of death row inmates were male

2019-04-12 12:09:33 UTC

oh

2019-04-12 12:09:37 UTC

yeah, then that's the problem

2019-04-12 12:09:42 UTC

we hang both genders regardless

2019-04-12 12:09:49 UTC

the law is blind to gender

2019-04-12 12:10:02 UTC

i'm more for not hanging anyone but i get your point of view

2019-04-12 12:10:25 UTC

I think capital punishment should not be used unless for the most sinister of crimes

2019-04-12 12:10:29 UTC

when its beyond a doubt

2019-04-12 12:11:14 UTC

justice has to speak up for the vicitim

2019-04-12 12:12:04 UTC

example, we had a serial murderer here before

2019-04-12 12:12:12 UTC

chopped up his victims

2019-04-12 12:12:14 UTC

into tiny pieces

2019-04-12 12:12:35 UTC

not a single murder mind you

2019-04-12 12:13:23 UTC

maybe with a single murder, a lawyer could argue to get your charge dropped down to manslaughter

2019-04-12 12:13:50 UTC

i don't believe in killing people for murder

2019-04-12 12:14:01 UTC

in an eye for eye society a lot of people would be blind

2019-04-12 12:14:21 UTC

the government is supposed to protect its citizens even if they are criminal and they have no right to kill them

2019-04-12 12:14:41 UTC

war is state sanctioned murder

2019-04-12 12:14:52 UTC

governments have every legal right to declare it

2019-04-12 12:15:23 UTC

yea but it's murder of other nations' citizens

2019-04-12 12:15:28 UTC

not that it's a good thing

2019-04-12 12:15:31 UTC

still murder morally

2019-04-12 12:15:46 UTC

the question is whether justice should be upheld

2019-04-12 12:15:48 UTC

or morality

2019-04-12 12:16:11 UTC

well i think morality is deeply subjective, that's why we have written laws

2019-04-12 12:16:26 UTC

yes, but morality and justice goes hand in hand

2019-04-12 12:16:35 UTC

laws and morality

2019-04-12 12:16:45 UTC

laws are based on morality, but they are not the same thing

2019-04-12 12:17:05 UTC

I'm saying they're linked and they complement one another

2019-04-12 12:17:36 UTC

yes but the laws are what should be enforced

2019-04-12 12:17:57 UTC

here's another problem

2019-04-12 12:18:05 UTC

what happens if you commit a crime in another country

2019-04-12 12:18:07 UTC

a judge can't imprison a person because they think what they did is wrong, they can only imprison people that violated the law

2019-04-12 12:18:10 UTC

which has the death penalty

2019-04-12 12:18:30 UTC

and you committed a crime which calls for it

2019-04-12 12:18:34 UTC

by that country's laws

2019-04-12 12:19:09 UTC

well that does happen

2019-04-12 12:19:14 UTC

of course it does

2019-04-12 12:19:21 UTC

singapore has hanged as many foreign nationals

2019-04-12 12:19:26 UTC

as it does locals

2019-04-12 12:19:32 UTC

usually there are diplomatic deals involved with that

2019-04-12 12:19:36 UTC

yes and no

2019-04-12 12:19:40 UTC

again, principles

2019-04-12 12:20:07 UTC

it ultimately comes down to politics

2019-04-12 12:20:43 UTC

for example if a us national gets sentenced for the death penalty in a country in which the us has power over, they can get them back

2019-04-12 12:20:48 UTC

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flor_Contemplacion <- here's one of the more famous examples

2019-04-12 12:21:14 UTC

yeah

2019-04-12 12:21:24 UTC

we got into hot soup over the canning of that american guy

2019-04-12 12:21:28 UTC

that must have been a shitty situation

2019-04-12 12:21:44 UTC

actually I'm more for the plight of migrant workers here though

2019-04-12 12:22:08 UTC

you will have people from poorer countries wanting to go to richer countries to work

2019-04-12 12:22:23 UTC

exploitation isn't restricted to the US

2019-04-12 12:22:27 UTC

but a crime is a crime

2019-04-12 12:25:23 UTC

we don't do this anymore, usually we try to quietly sweep the matter under the table

2019-04-12 12:25:29 UTC

but once it gets out to the media...

2019-04-12 12:27:04 UTC

moral of the story, don't do stupid shit right?

2019-04-12 12:54:22 UTC

It's usually a good idea to know what other countries laws are before you choose to go there

2019-04-12 12:57:19 UTC

of course

2019-04-12 12:57:28 UTC

but if you don't know, be respectful right

2019-04-12 12:57:44 UTC

you're not going to someone else's country and say, shit on someone's car right

2019-04-12 20:21:36 UTC

reminds of me the british guy that went to saudi arabia and got arrested because he had alcohol in his blood due to drinking wine on the flight

2019-04-12 20:22:04 UTC

it's not always about common sense, some countries have laws that you need to know before going

the Kaite Bouman wiki page is up for deletion! woo small victories!

2019-04-12 20:29:16 UTC

well it was basically a draft

2019-04-12 20:29:24 UTC

it didn't even say the complete dob

2019-04-12 20:30:07 UTC

tbh i have nothing against her, i just think her colleagues should have gotten recognition too

2019-04-12 20:30:57 UTC

90% of the citations on that wiki page are news articles, which do not contain any actual information about the project, the whole thing is built with sticks and thats shameful in the realm of wikipedia

2019-04-12 20:31:24 UTC

i agree

2019-04-12 20:31:27 UTC

they all amount to "look! its a girl! she did this because we say so! praise her!"

2019-04-12 20:31:38 UTC

but she doesn't deserve any hate herself

2019-04-12 20:31:43 UTC

its why the page has no valuable information beyond public records

2019-04-12 20:31:49 UTC

no she doesn't

2019-04-12 20:32:01 UTC

and I don't want to underplay her contribution to the Event Horizon Project

2019-04-12 20:32:09 UTC

but giving her this much attention and so much credit is wrong

2019-04-12 20:32:14 UTC

The media is crazy.. She didn't may had even known

2019-04-12 20:32:31 UTC

yup

2019-04-12 20:32:49 UTC

last I checked she hasn't actually made ANY public statements in the last few days

2019-04-12 20:32:54 UTC

There's was also a lot of misinformation being pushed

2019-04-12 20:32:58 UTC

though several people have impersonated her on social media

2019-04-12 20:33:08 UTC

That she was the head of the team

2019-04-12 20:33:17 UTC

She wasn't

2019-04-12 20:33:19 UTC

yea

2019-04-12 20:33:52 UTC

shes a grad student for crying out loud... and she doesn't actually have any background in astronomy

2019-04-12 20:34:12 UTC

I mean shes a great programmer for sure, but shes not actually a scientist

2019-04-12 20:34:55 UTC

tbh she has contributed like 2400 lines of code on the project's github repo

2019-04-12 20:35:12 UTC

there's a guy who has more than 850'000 and nobody talked about him

2019-04-12 20:35:48 UTC

Lines of code doesn't tell much about it

2019-04-12 20:36:15 UTC

The guy had made a statement about it

2019-04-12 20:36:23 UTC

i know there's more than writing code to programming, but the time consuming part is writing, debugging and all that stuff
