i think the problem is that people DO believe it
The npc meme?
they just don't know why
By not reasoning through their beliefs, they are not being effective people, so it is definitely a harsh criticism.
there are religious people who don't know why they believe, they just do. I do not doubt their sincerity in their statements on the matter
You mean like when they chant but will shrink when given the licrophone
Hm, I see
even if i believe, to an extent, their belief stems from the same herd/groupthink/indoctrination stuff
if that makes sense
I think this is a semantic difference
Sure, they're sincere, but they're also not thinking critically.
100% semantic
I think religious people are sincere in that, normally, they ground something in faith or some kind of experience they've had, etc
These may be flimsy ground, sometimes flexible, but it has a base somewhere
Or they trust someone. Like a pastor or relligious leader
Eventually you've just hit an axiom
Yeah, I'd class that as faith @GingaBomber
You grow up with christian parents that treat you well. So you trust them based on the factor you consider most prominent
Groupthink, though, is more...vacuous than that
If you were exposed to the better side of relligion, it should be normal if that person is more positively predisposed to relligion
It's like the axiom is "others are right"
But its not the same as following the hheard
I agree, @GingaBomber
IT can sometimes be
There are absolutely religious people who _are_ just "groupthinking"
You can argue that in politics its similar. Instead of pastors you have politicians.
Typically, those people's commitments wither when their social setting changes
Id also argue that for some instead its fear
I mean, it's a lot of things
But I do notice that disposition in my more progressive friends
Well.. I am sure in group think ostracism is a thing when one deviates to far
It's as if they place the kind of trust religious folk do in their leaders, but in media/"experts" generally instead
Like progressives with non progressive friends either lose them or become less progressive
Anyone here got an achived link of this: https://i.imgur.com/Fhqzlx7.png
Damn, wont embed
Still, like you said the regressive left is similar to a very large cult
