Why are you saying that to me when it wasn't my point?
it depends where the values stand
What's the rational basis for a family unit, or is there not one?
depends
On?
do you mean just normal family units
people may want to pursue kids
We'll use a "nuclear family" for simplicity's sake
love is selfish and only an altruist brute would disagree
The elderly took care of the grandkids, the kids took care of their parents and the grandkids were the next in line to continue your culture
The classic purpose of the old school nuclear family is/was child raising, not just child creation.
^
Also nuclear family is still pretty modern tbh
Extended families are more oldschool
But we'll just keep it to nuclear families
I have trouble keeping up with all the american “new” definitions of family types
Nuclear family is 2 parents, kids, and that's it
Agree on the definition
Extended families were 3 generations in one house
is this about whether families are rational or not or the systems
People still use it today, and it is outperforming both single parent and 2 parent households from what I can tell
smh
Red tide
Well no, it's more specific
It's about whether or not the rational for families is immediately apparent, at the moment where you make the decision
Wait what family structure is more optimal?
as long as you arent acting on mindless whims
If you didn't know the statistics for single parent households, what would your rationale be for keeping the family together?
Extended families are better than double parent households?
What if your mom is dysfunctional and you don’t want her around your kids
You should read some of the stories from cultures where there is no concept of monogamy so the fathers have no idea which kid is their's, so none of them give any shits for any of the women or children in their society
That's a specific scenario
Like the Arche people in Paraguay
But you'll more easily take care of dysfunctional family members with pooled resources
```Bejaro-the-killer was really mean. Really really mean. He came back from hunting and heard my brother crying. My brother was crying a lot and wouldn’t shut up. Then Bejaro slammed him against a tree. He slammed him and he was dead. My mother was crying when my father returned from hunting. My father didn’t do anything. He was upset. He didn’t do anything. He was really afraid of Bejaro-the-killer. Bejaro was really strong. ```
In either case
That anecdote might be sensationalized bullshit like a lot of anthropology is though, so take it with a grain of salt
Not to mention how non-monogamy tends to end up with a society of harems which results in angry violent men, but that's getting a bit off topic I suppose
