@Beemann yes, it was called your retirement plan

2018-11-06 18:47:37 UTC

It was, it isn't any longer

2018-11-06 18:48:23 UTC

Have enough children in the hope that enough of them would live into adulthood and take care of your elderly butt

2018-11-06 18:48:23 UTC

Cost of living in some areas is high enough that your kids won't be able to support you

2018-11-06 18:48:39 UTC

@Beemann they dont have to

2018-11-06 18:48:42 UTC

Which means you'd have to rely on collective movement

2018-11-06 18:48:49 UTC

they arent bound morally by it

2018-11-06 18:48:55 UTC

Why are you saying that to me when it wasn't my point?

2018-11-06 18:49:03 UTC

it depends where the values stand

2018-11-06 18:49:05 UTC

What's the rational basis for a family unit, or is there not one?

2018-11-06 18:49:15 UTC

depends

2018-11-06 18:49:19 UTC

On?

2018-11-06 18:49:23 UTC

do you mean just normal family units

2018-11-06 18:49:34 UTC

people may want to pursue kids

2018-11-06 18:49:40 UTC

We'll use a "nuclear family" for simplicity's sake

2018-11-06 18:50:12 UTC

love is selfish and only an altruist brute would disagree

2018-11-06 18:50:48 UTC

The elderly took care of the grandkids, the kids took care of their parents and the grandkids were the next in line to continue your culture

2018-11-06 18:50:49 UTC

The classic purpose of the old school nuclear family is/was child raising, not just child creation.

2018-11-06 18:50:56 UTC

^

2018-11-06 18:51:04 UTC

Also nuclear family is still pretty modern tbh

2018-11-06 18:51:10 UTC

Extended families are more oldschool

2018-11-06 18:51:26 UTC

But we'll just keep it to nuclear families

2018-11-06 18:52:03 UTC

I have trouble keeping up with all the american β€œnew” definitions of family types

2018-11-06 18:52:22 UTC

Nuclear family is 2 parents, kids, and that's it

2018-11-06 18:52:48 UTC

Agree on the definition

2018-11-06 18:52:54 UTC

Extended families were 3 generations in one house

2018-11-06 18:53:18 UTC

is this about whether families are rational or not or the systems

2018-11-06 18:53:22 UTC

People still use it today, and it is outperforming both single parent and 2 parent households from what I can tell

2018-11-06 18:53:22 UTC

smh

2018-11-06 18:53:27 UTC

Red tide

2018-11-06 18:53:31 UTC

Well no, it's more specific

2018-11-06 18:53:50 UTC

It's about whether or not the rational for families is immediately apparent, at the moment where you make the decision

2018-11-06 18:54:07 UTC

Wait what family structure is more optimal?

2018-11-06 18:54:11 UTC

as long as you arent acting on mindless whims

2018-11-06 18:54:19 UTC

If you didn't know the statistics for single parent households, what would your rationale be for keeping the family together?

2018-11-06 18:54:31 UTC

Extended families are better than double parent households?

2018-11-06 18:54:32 UTC

@>_ extended

2018-11-06 18:55:01 UTC

What if your mom is dysfunctional and you don’t want her around your kids

2018-11-06 18:55:13 UTC

You should read some of the stories from cultures where there is no concept of monogamy so the fathers have no idea which kid is their's, so none of them give any shits for any of the women or children in their society

2018-11-06 18:55:20 UTC

That's a specific scenario

2018-11-06 18:55:35 UTC

Like the Arche people in Paraguay
