I never said Token Characters.

2019-01-04 00:08:23 UTC

I said I wanted the diverse characters to matter.

2019-01-04 00:08:38 UTC

on one hand yes. supporting characters do need their own story arcs, but when it overshadows the MC that's when the story fails to follow it's own plot (again, that depends on if it is intentional)

2019-01-04 00:08:41 UTC

It technically is a disorder, but it's not going to cause actual harm by mere existence.

2019-01-04 00:09:04 UTC

@Abel its a disorder but not mental in nature

2019-01-04 00:09:06 UTC

Rather it is LGBT, any race, any religion, or any political stance; I want them to matter and have their own stories.

2019-01-04 00:09:15 UTC

It is though

2019-01-04 00:09:16 UTC

many people conflate neurology, psychiatry and psychology though.

2019-01-04 00:09:21 UTC

Only psychology is mental

2019-01-04 00:09:37 UTC

Oh all right you're using a more specific terminology

2019-01-04 00:09:38 UTC

Why can't we have those background plots, that really don't take the main focus of the story, but are there if you pay attention?

2019-01-04 00:09:54 UTC

@Dusty MorganFun fact, there's a trans character in Alien

2019-01-04 00:09:57 UTC

you're conflating psychiatry with a field of scientific study

2019-01-04 00:10:06 UTC

Didn't know that Abel.

2019-01-04 00:10:17 UTC

Lambert was trans

2019-01-04 00:10:46 UTC

personally, I don't notice token characters (other people always have to point them out for me to see it) because all I want is a well develop character with their own issues and how they overcome them

2019-01-04 00:10:56 UTC

I was told by my writing class in high school. Just relying on a single plot, you are just putting your eggs all in one basket.

2019-01-04 00:11:00 UTC

And it didn't matter because she was treated as a normal character with her own faults, ambition, and character

2019-01-04 00:11:14 UTC

Some people might not be invested in the main story, but they might be invested in a character's story.

2019-01-04 00:11:24 UTC

(also didn't matter because she was alien fodder)

2019-01-04 00:11:27 UTC

That is why it is a good idea to have a plot for all the characters, their own stories and struggles.

2019-01-04 00:11:29 UTC

Alien was pretty progressive for its time, but it didn't ram it down your throat, they just made a good movie.

2019-01-04 00:11:29 UTC

sometimes multiple plots become too much. Not everyone will realize what is going on until the very end, if they ever realize it

2019-01-04 00:11:57 UTC

Hell look at star trek

2019-01-04 00:12:05 UTC

That is why I actually... loved Dr. Who when I first started watching.

2019-01-04 00:12:07 UTC

People loved it back in the day

2019-01-04 00:12:07 UTC

The sub-plots.

2019-01-04 00:12:20 UTC

you also run the chance of making the original plot line flat and boring

2019-01-04 00:12:29 UTC

People don't care about whether a movie is progressive or conservative, they care whether it's good and interesting

2019-01-04 00:12:53 UTC

Exactly Abel.

2019-01-04 00:12:56 UTC

Or dependent on forcing ideology down your throat with half baked token characters like the new She Ra

2019-01-04 00:13:28 UTC

if a story is well written, the sub-plots tie into the main-plot without anyone really noticing

2019-01-04 00:13:30 UTC

My trans friend does not like the new She Ra

2019-01-04 00:13:46 UTC

A post-op MtF

2019-01-04 00:13:48 UTC

Did she explain why?

2019-01-04 00:14:02 UTC

I am interested in her or his opinion.

2019-01-04 00:14:09 UTC

"that new She-Ra looks like crap, they made her look like a boy."

2019-01-04 00:14:24 UTC

Her exact words

2019-01-04 00:14:27 UTC

That is it.... nothing about the character's personality or plot?

2019-01-04 00:14:30 UTC

By the way, i dont agree with people saying the season of doctor who prior to thechick was progressive at all. quite the opposite, quite conservative. Yes, social justice showed up, it was made fun of in many cases

2019-01-04 00:14:32 UTC

Nevermind.
