It's been pretty well studied that just about anything requiring memory operations, like math, or data structure planning, or engineering, becomes significantly harder to be productive at when listening to music, especially music with vocals.
And the area in which music helps the most is when you're in a purely reactive state, and again, the music doesn't have vocals. Vocals pretty well always impeede performance.
I don't listen to music with vocals usually

The band TYR started out great...... but since their album Valkyria, they've went to wanting to reach too many people, making them lose what made them good.
Sure they started a certain way and went to make some pretty good power metal, but the soul was still there.
Now, it's more like Death Metal..... and while I don't dislike death metal, it's not what want to listen to when listening to their music

their first album took a bit of time before liking. It's got that TRUE experimental vibe to it. They were just making music because they liked it. They didn't know about genres being associated to musics.
Also, their first album has the most complex lyrics.
