For this conversation a reverse trap is someone with a lot of masculine characteristics, but has girl bits.

This too is ambiguous. Though usually the "Are traps gay?" is asked in the context of having sex with one. So lets assume the reverse trap is bisexual at minimum, and you are a dude.
But there are addtional qualifying questions. Like is this reverse trap a tomboy, a handsome girl, or is there full on five o'clock shadow?
At the end of the day she's still a female regardless of her appearance so if I was to have sex with her it wouldn't be gay. I see bisexuals as just a different type of gay because even if they have sex with the opposite sex they still have sex with the same sex AKA (incompatible for breeding purposes) and that to me is what gay comes down to when it's all said and done. @Grumplebee

I agree. But that doesn't answer my original question. Is that a boy or a girl and why are they so popular?
Well, the context of the image implies it's a boy, but people have lied about that before. As for the popularity of such things I can sum it up in two words real quick:
Word one: Memes.
It's a funny thing to talk and debate about especially given the current politcal climate. Which allows for stupifying amounts of hair splitting, e tc.
Word Two: Degeneracy
This is simpler. During their degenerate phases the Greeks were often obsessed with the hermaphrodite. A mythological creature (in their context) that would finally allow them to have go full MGTOW and not have to deal with those pesky, hysterical women and their sexual obsessions.
Seriously, ancient Greeks views on sex stuff are strangely reversed from our modern ones. In Greek theater and writing women were the ones stereotypically obsessed with sex and baby making. While men were "above" it. More enlightened, and interested in things like science, math, philosophy, debate, etc.
