> "nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism" that's retarded

I think he merely means that nationalism betrays partiotism by taking it too far.

2019-12-03 15:14:24 UTC

here is the full quote

2019-12-03 15:14:29 UTC

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism,” Macron said in a 20-minute address delivered from under the Arc de Triomphe to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

2019-12-03 15:14:48 UTC

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism"?

2019-12-03 15:15:19 UTC

Yeah, that ... that IS retarded.

2019-12-03 15:16:07 UTC

that's why i'd give him a pass if something was lost in translation but no one ever tried to correct it from his side

2019-12-03 15:16:59 UTC

I understand that Nationalism can go too far, when it goes extreme, it can power fascism.

2019-12-03 15:21:13 UTC

or course, any idea that inspires people to action can taken too far can be bad

2019-12-03 16:29:36 UTC

Does he maybe not understand the definition of the word? It also doesn't help that the word 'nationalist' has become so coupled with 'nazis'.

2019-12-03 16:29:45 UTC

There's stupid and then there's... this

2019-12-03 16:29:50 UTC

>exact opposite
That's the key part

2019-12-03 16:30:21 UTC

Which led me to question whether or not he even understands what the word means...

2019-12-03 16:30:53 UTC

I don't think there are many words in the dictionary that are too much closer in meaning, without being equal

2019-12-03 16:31:05 UTC

Not the same words by any means, there are key differences

2019-12-03 16:31:07 UTC

But very similar

2019-12-03 16:31:39 UTC

Macron is saying something akin to "the sky is never blue"

2019-12-03 16:32:02 UTC

I suppose if someone wants to be specific about it, a "nationalist" can be categorized as someone who believes their nation is superior to all other nations and a "patriot" is someone who is willing to protect/defend their nation from intruders and harm.

2019-12-03 16:32:14 UTC

But that's a stretch

2019-12-03 16:32:48 UTC

A nationalist is someone who thinks having a nation is better than not having one

2019-12-03 16:33:21 UTC

Supremacy of one nation over the other is national supremacism or something like that

2019-12-03 16:33:56 UTC

Yea, which is why I said it was a stretch if he's going for that definition

2019-12-03 16:34:33 UTC

But oh well, nothing new from the play book I suppose from a avowed leftist. Redefining words to whatever suits them

2019-12-03 16:41:20 UTC

A nationalist doesn't have to feel he cares about his country because it's has anything superior to another country.

2019-12-03 16:42:03 UTC

i can be 'patriotic' about my State but just because of how things generally are in it.

2019-12-03 16:43:51 UTC

Yeah it's totally possible to be patriotic without being nationalistic, sure. If Macron made that point it would be fine, although I wouldn't know why that would be an important thing to say.

2019-12-03 16:44:15 UTC

often, lefties try to tie the ideas of nazis and eugenics with nationalism

2019-12-03 16:44:39 UTC

that's muddles things

2019-12-03 16:44:40 UTC

yep, hence why we should keep pushing the fact that Hitler was left-wing

2019-12-03 16:45:06 UTC

And the idea that fascism is generally left/center

2019-12-03 16:46:35 UTC

hitler wasn't nationalist so much as he was an Imperialist. Trump is a nationalist and has no desire to go around conquering other countries

2019-12-03 16:46:55 UTC

Yep

2019-12-03 16:47:16 UTC

It was called the Third Reich, not the Third Nation

2019-12-03 16:47:23 UTC

And he conquered, he didn't protect

2019-12-03 17:09:49 UTC

i don't see how nationalist and imperialist are mutually exclusive categories

2019-12-03 17:12:17 UTC

also his foreign policy was largely based around taking back german territory

2019-12-03 17:13:15 UTC

The point is the narrative of nationalism = evil

2019-12-03 17:13:48 UTC

By demonstrating that Hitler wasn't even nationalist in the first place, it becomes easier to defeat the less informed crowd

2019-12-03 17:14:20 UTC

i mean you can't demonstrate that because he very obviously was

2019-12-03 17:14:31 UTC

He was no more nationalist than any other leader

2019-12-03 17:15:23 UTC

are you saying that in the sense of speaking to hitler's private beliefs

2019-12-03 17:15:31 UTC

because his ideology was certainly very nationalistic
