@RhinoMaxTV I feel like I know exactly which piece you're referring to, but could you repost it alongside your reference and then just ping me so I could take a look?

2020-02-18 20:40:35 UTC

If it's the piece I'm thinking of, then right off the bat, I feel like your colors are too muddy for that particular art style.

Impressionism and the related styles are all known for their vibrant, harmonious colors. Some of the best ever in that regard, actually; and as it happens, I've studied their system of color selection.

Thats the reference. Im way off on it right now. But every failure is a lesson. These guys are called masters for a reason. Ha.

@RhinoMaxTV Yeah, that's exactly the one I was thinking of. Anyways, I'm not sure if this is for a personal project or for school or what-not. Looking at your other work gives me a sense of where you're at skill-wise. I do like that you're taking on ambitious projects and studying from masterworks.

That said, I get the sense that maybe you didn't do an underdrawing first and just went straight to paints? Because it looks like you're losing a lot of the shape, form, and structure.

Here are some things I feel that you could work on:

Warm in this case refers to color temperature. So the original piece is very warm, whereas yours feels very cool (in the sense of coldness, not awesomeness).

I wouldn't talk at this stage about color, since right now the values are way off. For a start you need to be able to separate darks from lights on the image into big masses. It's a good idea to leave paints for now and just do a monochrome drawing.

2020-02-19 15:43:10 UTC

Having looked at some of Rhino's other work, he's good at adding some of these details later. I'd wait and see how he goes with this attempt, and incorporate suggestions into the next one, given he's said he's had a few attempt already and learns new stuff each time.

2020-02-19 15:45:29 UTC

Are you replying to me or marushia? Because I'm not talking about details, so I'm a bit confused.

2020-02-19 18:24:32 UTC

I did address the values issue a bit in pointing out the lights - even circling some of them in red as examples - and while I generally advise people to focus on value before color, I've also seen people work directly with colored light, so ... it depends on the person's working methods. It's more important that they have an understanding of fundamentals and how to diagnose what's wrong and how to fix it.

So if Rhino is able to adjust the values using color - which he might have to at this point - then so be it. I'm just telling him which areas to focus on.

2020-02-19 18:26:01 UTC

I mean, unless he wants to repaint over it in black an white before matching the values with color, which I highly doubt. It is what it is, just try and make it as good as it can be and learn for next time.

colours in your painting don't look too cool compared to this

An instrument I'm making

2020-02-20 09:51:02 UTC

First one I cut out , the frames were to thin and snapped. So I made the sound box more rectangular . Hopefully it sounds alright when I glue the two frames together and finish it up

2020-02-20 11:53:42 UTC

Ought to prove interesting.

@Marushia Dark your assessment is 100% correct. I was drawing it and then just started laying colors down. Im cleaning it up and using a prospek. I have a really difficult time mixing colors and getting them right. Also the reference im using is a poster of this painting and a lot of the contrast was lost in the process. I will have another update on this on saturday or sunday and im hoping to have a lot of the shapes more accurately drawn in. Thabk you very much for taking the time to critique it and the advice. I appreciate it.

2020-02-20 14:35:04 UTC

Yep, no problem.

2020-02-20 14:38:40 UTC

This might be a bit difficult to explain here in chat, but basically when I was in art school, they touch us a technique of color-matching. So we'd do exercises of, "Here's a color, now mix your paints and try to match the hue, the value, the saturation." We'd compare what we made to what our reference once, attuning our eyes to the differences between the two, trying to learn why they looked different. Sort of like practicing scales in music, trying to learn the notes before combining and transitioning between them.

It's easier to start this with black and white since you're just having to match straight value. And generally, that's what we did was do an underpainting in value before matching the value brush stroke for brush stroke on top of it in color, only then focusing on hue and saturation.

This game actually serves a similar function to that in so far as training your eye to detect subtleties. 🙂

At least with colour it makes sense, unlike music

2020-02-20 16:16:41 UTC

Music doesn't exist in space as usually perceived. It's fucking magic <:GWmythicalHyperREEEE:373159924487684106>

2020-02-20 16:18:25 UTC

music is just mathematical relationships between sound waveforms

And magic is just mathematical relationships between energy fields and currents <:hypersmugon:544638648721604608>
