@What Would Jack Conte Do? There's flat board vices that are used for surface mount soldering. They basically look like stanrdard press vices but they have plastic inserts with notches on them.

plugged it in and it seems to be completely functional

Yes, there was an experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
