To be honest I tend to agree

The internet is a main part of our society now. Being proficient with it is a major factor with how successful you are, preventing your kid from accessing it will put him in a huge disadvantage, to to the point I could see it reasonably be called child abuse

Kids should at the very list know more or less how the internet works by the time they are 12

Preferably a lot sooner

Banning from the Internet can (and should, I think) sill be used for discipline.
It's like grounding.
"You can come back when you behave like a proper human being", or something like that.
