It was pretty bad. Went there when I was a kid. The commies had this thing called a 'Beriozka' store which took every currency *except* the ruble because they did not want to taint the people with the lavish capitalist lifestyle. It mostly sold crap and cheap beer. On the Airoflot from Stockholm to Moscba we were the only foreigners. The Nomenclatura were stuffing overhead and underseat piles of shit they bought in Sweeden. Once we settled in we found some black market guys. I traded my old gym shoes for a Soviet Cornel dress uniform fur hat. The central bank paid 70 Kopek to the dollar but on the street you could get 3-5 Rubles. Little kids took English in school but they didn't learn capitalist words like 'trade' so they would mob you holding up medals they won at school saying "change?" as in 'change this into something good' We all got piles of little soviet metals in exchange for gum because the kids thought chewing gun was an awesome treat.
