cultural relativism, brightens any day

2017-11-06 18:48:36 UTC

dude, i'm black and i can't stand american blacks

2017-11-06 18:49:08 UTC

I only see the point of historical relativism

2017-11-06 18:49:33 UTC

Dont judge the past on todays standards

2017-11-06 18:50:16 UTC

Absolutley, jusdging the past on current morals is the reason the church defamed all the statues in Rome and now has a bag of Dicks in its basement somewhere

2017-11-06 18:50:31 UTC

Something I have never forgiven them for

2017-11-06 18:50:35 UTC

And the statue genocide in US

2017-11-06 18:50:58 UTC

yep

2017-11-06 18:51:10 UTC

so long as we don't start arguing that it's impossible to judge other currently existing cultures for their terrible ideas, I don't think we have much of a problem

2017-11-06 18:51:37 UTC

not that I'd expect something like that here, really

2017-11-06 18:51:48 UTC

yeha, basically my idea is that cultures should be held to the highest ideal of their time

2017-11-06 18:52:34 UTC

but of course they would have to have relativley close proximity, Rome and China for instance, didn't have much contact, so we couldn't really judge them together.

2017-11-06 18:52:47 UTC

Because they were basically two different worlds

2017-11-06 18:53:35 UTC

You can judge current cultures

2017-11-06 18:54:08 UTC

Otherwise they will never better themself

2017-11-06 18:54:16 UTC

yes, but we judge them based on the current highest ideal, I wouldn't want our cultures to be judged in 200 years based on the ideals 200 years from now

2017-11-06 18:54:28 UTC

cause of course it will be considered defficient

2017-11-06 18:56:28 UTC

from the perspective of an imagined culture that has had longer time to mature and develop, I'm certain we'd still be considered drooling barbarians.

2017-11-06 18:56:58 UTC

Well, if they were ignorant

2017-11-06 18:57:14 UTC

Not putting us in our historical context

2017-11-06 18:59:26 UTC

perhaps, but I wouldn't immediately fault them for thinking so

2017-11-06 19:00:04 UTC

If we know better, then they should

2017-11-06 19:00:25 UTC

Yes we are connected

2017-11-06 19:01:35 UTC

That is why we live a better life

2017-11-06 19:01:35 UTC

We do know better. If we're struggling with the same issues in 50 years, which I certainly don't hope, there's a case to be made against at least part of us.

2017-11-06 19:01:57 UTC

That's fair

2017-11-06 19:02:01 UTC

Nobody is perfect

2017-11-06 19:02:35 UTC

Yes, but we still have people who believe in judging the past on the present, which is very worrying

2017-11-06 19:02:45 UTC

considering they have had sucess

2017-11-06 19:03:16 UTC

whoa whoa

2017-11-06 19:03:19 UTC

Colonialism was a net bennefit for Africa

2017-11-06 19:03:20 UTC

2017-11-06 19:03:27 UTC

cultural relativism detected

2017-11-06 19:03:29 UTC

I think it's fair to be able to point out the terrible ideas of the past, so we can learn from them.

2017-11-06 19:03:41 UTC

no, like using current morals to judge the past

2017-11-06 19:03:45 UTC

that's what I'm against

2017-11-06 19:04:08 UTC

tell me again how the saudis culture of hanging gay men with a crane en masse is in any way comparable to liberal western democracy

2017-11-06 19:04:14 UTC

because the past will always be defficient

2017-11-06 19:04:23 UTC

The morals have evolved

2017-11-06 19:04:23 UTC

It's Iran who does that

2017-11-06 19:04:28 UTC

Well one can judge the cultures, but the actions of individuals should be considered relative to their environment
