Not sure what to make of Trump's trade war. I don't buy the narrative pushed by the left media (and even some of the right) that this is all about Trump replacing the allies of the United States, preferring Russia and NK. Nor do I think that this attitude pushed by the Reagan Battalion is very fair either.

2018-06-10 19:00:06 UTC

What I see going wrong, is that Trump has overestimated himself. In his own words, he claims to ultimately want no tariffs, no subsidies, and no barriers to trade. Achieving that, or something closer to that than before would be considered something like a victory. Of course, as of late we've only been moving farther from that. Again in Trump's words, he says we win this war "a thousand out of a thousand times".

2018-06-10 19:00:53 UTC

So *my* fear is that these other countries simply never reduce tariffs, subsidies, and barriers back to a level at or below what they were before.

2018-06-10 19:01:27 UTC

It really comes down to putting a *lot* of trust in Trump and the people in govt negotiating for us and I think most people don't like the sound of that...

2018-06-10 19:01:58 UTC

Except Trump knows how to negotiate.

2018-06-10 19:02:24 UTC

Yes, but nonetheless this is risky.

2018-06-10 19:02:49 UTC

His solution seems to be solving a problem by first making the problem worse, no?

2018-06-10 19:03:16 UTC

I haven’t done much research, but it sounds like Trump is pulling a lot of big moves to get his voters, especially the less educated of them, to vote for him again and vote in November for the GOP candidates. Let’s be honest, us Americans like the sound of higher wages for Americans(a championed hope for the trade war), and he’s preying on that to sway those who don’t have time to research.

2018-06-10 19:04:25 UTC

I agree that he does like to create then solve problems, too. Controversy is his schtick

2018-06-10 19:05:49 UTC

I'm just wondering... how high are the tariffs going to have to go before they start coming back down? How high is Trump willing to jack them up? And once they're so high up there, I would think it would only become harder and harder to get them back down.

2018-06-10 19:06:27 UTC

As high as he can before it starts to fade from the news

2018-06-10 19:07:10 UTC

He seems to be relying on being able to eventually sit down and agree to just wipe the slate clean and that sounds simply miraculous compared to the way reform usually goes.

2018-06-10 19:08:43 UTC

Does trump is gay

2018-06-10 19:09:16 UTC

If it's true what he said, farmers were moving to Canada because of the subsidies... It's only fair to tax them.

2018-06-10 19:09:17 UTC

True, that does seem to be his gamble. Then again, he knows things we don’t. But he doesn’t care about the country (few politicians actually do), he cares about his power and fame, and keeping it.

2018-06-10 19:09:59 UTC

True, he knows what sort of leverage the US has to work with.

2018-06-10 19:10:14 UTC

That's part of why I'd be willing to hold onto my trust.

2018-06-10 19:11:03 UTC

But I'm not so sure about thinking he doesn't care about the country.

2018-06-10 19:12:06 UTC

Perhaps he does. But a country is such an abstract thing. Was Caesar loyal to Rome, or his friends and army?

2018-06-10 19:12:35 UTC

Trump runs on instict
He doesnt have a concrete plan @cheetah2013a

2018-06-10 19:12:53 UTC

True, and observant

2018-06-10 19:13:06 UTC

I think that attitude that politicians only care about power and fame is overblown. I think plenty of them care about the country, it's just that plenty of them think they know a lot more than what they do about what's good for the country. Perhaps I'm being too charitable but I think it's good to try.

2018-06-10 19:13:33 UTC

No, you’re probably right. I’m just really cynical

2018-06-10 19:13:46 UTC

If Trump cared about power, he wouldn't be clashing so much against both parties. He would have filled his government with the other Republicans, like Obama did with Hillary.

2018-06-10 19:14:21 UTC

True, he's done things for which neither party will congratulate him, like with pardoning that black woman.

2018-06-10 19:14:55 UTC

Yeah, he does seem to be going against his own party sometimes, but he’s making the news

2018-06-10 19:16:10 UTC

What black woman? I missed that story...

2018-06-10 19:17:44 UTC

There's the first article I found.

2018-06-10 19:17:59 UTC

Basically, she had a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense.

2018-06-10 19:18:35 UTC

So all the Republicans who are very anti-drugs would not be happy about it.
