All of them? - I was wondering because in the UK some MPs can get replaced in by-elections halfway through the main political cycle

2018-11-07 01:49:03 UTC

2018-11-07 01:49:53 UTC

Oh wow, democrats lost the 2014 midterms <:GWcmeisterPeepoE:403295297159299083>

2018-11-07 01:49:57 UTC

The House is intended to be the most responsive to the sways of the popular will, so they change out all reps(in theory) every 2 years

The Senate was to provide stability out of synch with the Presidency's 4 year terms, so they change out a third each 2 years for 6 year terms @Agamemnon's Death Mask

2018-11-07 01:50:04 UTC

Well they lost 9 seats

2018-11-07 01:50:17 UTC

Look up the 2010 election

2018-11-07 01:50:53 UTC

Florida is on a knife edge

2018-11-07 01:50:58 UTC

It was that election that made Obama basically give up on passing legislation after Obamacare

2018-11-07 01:51:59 UTC

After that it was all Executive Orders

2018-11-07 01:52:16 UTC

@@Legiondude that seems actually really great in theory, but could leave the house vulnerable to modern reactionary rhetoric

2018-11-07 01:52:36 UTC

That's kind of what trump is though

2018-11-07 01:52:38 UTC

Well that's why there's the bicameral requirement

2018-11-07 01:53:01 UTC

If the House is reactionary, they can only pass legislation into law if the Senate accepts and doesn't make changes to it, plus the President has to accept it

2018-11-07 01:53:22 UTC

Indiana flipped republican just then

2018-11-07 01:53:35 UTC

Democrats just lost a seat

2018-11-07 01:53:36 UTC

And cutting out the President accepting things requires a 2/3rds majority from both houses

2018-11-07 01:54:53 UTC

That makes sense. I've said for a while there's a lot that the UK should adopt from the US system

2018-11-07 01:55:36 UTC

I like how they've "called" Ohio, with 12% of the vote lol

2018-11-07 01:56:01 UTC

Cause that makes sense...

2018-11-07 01:57:34 UTC

If the Senate does make changes to the reactionary House's bill, then the House has to vote on if they accept the changes. If they don't, it's basically dead

So, excluding the formation of political parties, the system is designed to be moderating through the Checks and Balances system
