It largely does, actually; unless you're inciting violence, committing an act of libel or slander, or saying something with demonstrable direct physical consequences such as shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. All somebody is allowed to do is socially ostracise you or disassociate from you.

we as a society agreed that certain expressions of yourself should be protected, and you can't play games with something as fundamental as that

nobody should be allowed to rule over the words you use to speak, to give that power away to someone else always leads down a very dark road, and I would challenge them to provide evidence to the contrary (because you can't)

If you frame your argument within a good enough context, and challenge people to debate your premise, it helps them to open up to different ways of thinking

and you have to make a serious effort to try and empathize from where they are coming from (or even have to help them to better understand their own arguments), and try to be persuasive
