What are you looking for? One on one or multiple opponents? Offensive or defensive? Asian or Western? Weapons or hand to hand?

So there are a few places near me that teach martial arts. Main ones are BJJ, muay thai, and combat hapkido. I'm looking for something to improve general fitness but also provide some defensive skills as well.

I did competitive sport pistol shooting for 5 years, and wanted something more physical after i was done, after 5 years of shooting range I was left with a nasty back pain from shooting positions, lack of physical exercise, and weak back muscles, after a while I started doing muay-thai, the back pain that i had for a about more than a year dissapeared after 3 months, and im the best shape of my life rn

its my 3rd year doing muay thai and im satisfied in what i learned concerning fighting, as I had once found myself at a fight outside the gym, to test that

2019-03-30 02:25:21 UTC

so I would recomend such sport to you, just make sure the coaches there are not scammers or slackers, and will actually teach you to fight

2019-03-30 02:26:35 UTC

our coach is a certified trainer and he was a competition fighter himself, so he always give good advices

@SteamedHams I'm not familiar with the latter two. I have a friend that does BJJ and he seems to get workouts from it, but it looks super gay when they roll around on the ground lol

2019-03-30 02:40:19 UTC

you will look pretty gay also when one of them breaks your arm

2019-03-30 02:41:13 UTC

or chokes you out

2019-03-30 02:46:57 UTC

just go and learn a traditional combat sport that is around for a long time

2019-03-30 02:47:38 UTC

such as boxing, muaythai, jiujitsu, taekwondo etc.

2019-03-30 02:47:51 UTC

dont fall for that ''self defence'' meme

2019-04-04 18:30:58 UTC

Hapkido has terrible quality control. Most guys are total bulls hitters, but if you find someone who really knows their stuff, it's awesome.

2019-04-07 13:01:23 UTC

BJJ and Muay Thai are go-tos but learning boxing in-depth provides invaluabke knowledge about footwork, spacing and timing. The stamina doesnt hurt either. As men of our persuasion, you will be facing moee than one opponent at a time, so muay thai and boxing is more useful than BJJ in everything other than 1 on 1

2019-04-07 13:01:56 UTC

If you only focus on boxing, you will be destroyed by people who do more than one martial art
