You have to understand, the bulk of the Old Testament is meant to be taken as a warning. Lots of stuff sounds bad as a sound byte, but taken in context it's always making an important statement recounting the degeneracy

It is made very clear that Israel had a hard heart, but God makes it clear what is the final commandment: love God above all things, and your neighbor as yourself

That is what Christ then repeats, but it is in the OT, when the mosaic law is given

Pretty much. And even the leaders indulge in non-charitable behaviour, but they are never described as perfect people, which is why the attempt to imply that endless prophecies that clearly refer to the messiah and his glory ackshually refer to them is nonsensical

Not only that, even when God comands anathema and complete destruction of cities, mercy is given to those who ask, like that one nation when the nations of the promise land where being conquered
