First off we don't need a priesthood anymore. Jesus is our High King and Priest; because he fulfilled that role when he died, and was raised from the dead. The whole reason for the priesthood in the first place was to setup a system that pointed to Jesus, and what he would do on the cross.

@Railingo the Priesthood is the power and authority to act in God’s name; it is the power by which miracles are performed. It is the power by which Christ raised Lazarus from the dead, Peter and John healed a lame man, Moses parted the Red Sea, and Elijah called down fire upon the priests of Baal. I have seen this power for myself, both through blessing of healing and through revelation given to me by those holding the priesthood.
But to your point, if the whole purpose of the priesthood is to point us towards Christ and His Atonement (which I 100% agree with), why would we no longer need it today?

I have seen laymen do the same things; because they have the power of Christ, and not because they're priests.

The bigger question is why did you say a different answer when I gave you the right answer seconds before. The answer? You're a sexist! Well ok, maybe you're not. But you were likely raised in a society that views maleness as default. And men are considered the default. So when you read 'Americans' you interpreted that as 'American men'. See, society affects you in myriad ways. Powerful stuff!
