Could I weigh in with some questions?

2019-02-12 16:21:22 UTC

I don't trust people to accurately describe the difference between something physiologic and pathologic

2019-02-12 16:21:37 UTC
2019-02-12 16:21:51 UTC

my bad. Got distracted at work. lol

2019-02-12 16:21:54 UTC

Lol

2019-02-12 16:21:56 UTC

Same

2019-02-12 16:22:41 UTC

A few decades ago, wasn't homosexuality viewed as a mental disorder?

2019-02-12 16:22:55 UTC

yes

2019-02-12 16:22:56 UTC

If so, why? and why has that changed now?

2019-02-12 16:23:01 UTC

Well

2019-02-12 16:23:19 UTC

What is the difference between a mental disorder and a human trait

2019-02-12 16:24:15 UTC

It seems like, at least with the trans and gender bending movement, political persuasion plays a significant role in our scientific and medical research and may have or is perverting our findings and how we proceed as a species.

2019-02-12 16:24:31 UTC

With the body, you could argue women's cellulite is a disorder, but since about 80% of women get it, it could be described as a secondary sex characteristic

2019-02-12 16:24:56 UTC

@SpanishAbbey good point. idk.

2019-02-12 16:25:11 UTC

but cellulite or anything physical has an evolutionary purpose

2019-02-12 16:25:13 UTC

Again, it comes down to how you make the distinction

2019-02-12 16:25:27 UTC

Evolution and purpose don't go together

2019-02-12 16:25:29 UTC

So does homosexuality

2019-02-12 16:26:13 UTC

Not for the person himself though, more to his sister

2019-02-12 16:26:26 UTC

Mental things are also evolutionary traits. You can't separate the body and mind so easily

2019-02-12 16:26:50 UTC

mind or brain? or both?

2019-02-12 16:26:52 UTC

😛

2019-02-12 16:26:56 UTC

Both

2019-02-12 16:27:22 UTC

They follow the same evolutionary pressures as physical traits

2019-02-12 16:27:36 UTC

I would make that assumption as well.

2019-02-12 16:27:44 UTC

At what point do we decide something needs to cured?

2019-02-12 16:28:03 UTC

Who makes that dee

2019-02-12 16:28:10 UTC

Decision

2019-02-12 16:28:23 UTC

I dont think homosexuality needs to be "cured" btw, just to make that clear lol

2019-02-12 16:28:38 UTC

BTW: homosexuality in China wasn't viewed as something horrendous up until the 18th century

2019-02-12 16:28:46 UTC

Or 19

2019-02-12 16:29:08 UTC

I have more webbing between my fingers than most. At what point do I need to cure that

2019-02-12 16:29:26 UTC

Or negative in general

2019-02-12 16:29:26 UTC

So this highlights my concern (or maybe curiosity) about this issue.

2019-02-12 16:30:13 UTC

Is how we categorize mental disorders, diseases, abnormalities, etc. socially determined and defined or scientifically?

2019-02-12 16:30:29 UTC

or are those two categorizations not mutually exclusive?

2019-02-12 16:30:45 UTC

A lot of basic human traits have been incorrectly made pathological

2019-02-12 16:31:19 UTC

i.e. California no longer mandating divulging your HIV to a sexual partner (if I'm referencing that properly) in order to reduce the stigma associated with having HIV...

2019-02-12 16:31:22 UTC

I don't think they are mutually exclusive

2019-02-12 16:31:40 UTC

HIV is a horrible virus

2019-02-12 16:31:51 UTC

In relation to extra hand-webbing: I'd say that when something impedes normal functions is the line you could draw. If they don't negatively impact your manual dexterity it's nothing to worry about. But if they do, it's something to be concerned of.
Though perhaps by this same logic, since homosexuality doesn't produce offspring and is therefore a dead end, it would be classified as a disorder of some sort.
