The Galileo myth is a myth. He was imprisoned for getting involved in what was live wire power politics at the time. He declared his theory that the universe revolved around the sun was gospel truth (2 years before the minor theological differences and disagreements between the Catholics and Protestants erupted into 30 years of war).
Religion is how you manipulate the dumb, the lonely, and the lost into doing things you want them too whether that is donating to church or launching a Jihad across the world

To paraphrase Hitchens, We are basically in a galactic north Korea if God is going to make you suffer for eternity for not believing in him despite him not providing any evidence to encourage to do so
God is real but he's not mean and won't send you to Hell. Humans can't really make religious claims with any certainty, this includes every character in the Bible
