Anyway technically beta is the letter that inspired the b in the latin alphabet and it has the same pronounciation to it, I'm fairly sure that modern Greek β can be both pronounced as a b and a v. It must have changed further, in ancient greek b is β but it can assume the pronounciation of v if in the archaic origin of the word there was originally a digamma as I said, which changed to the closest letter phonetically
