so you just sit in an echo chamber of people who agree with you?

2019-01-18 04:19:21 UTC

why not challenge your ideas and see if they stand to other peoples ideas

2019-01-18 04:19:59 UTC

It doesn't work like that.

2019-01-18 04:20:14 UTC

why doesnt it?

2019-01-18 04:20:53 UTC

When you do a basic glance at manipulation/propaganda strategies, the "market of ideas" where you intentionally looking for the best, fair arguments doesn't work in reality.

2019-01-18 04:21:01 UTC

i talk to people i disagree with all the time, if im proven wrong or something i look to strengthen my argument or change my point of view

2019-01-18 04:22:05 UTC

When most of the arguments you come across with follow the same set of rules and come from the same instinctual motivation, it doesn't matter if you experience that argument first hand or just think of it while daydreaming.

2019-01-18 04:22:47 UTC

thats why you challenge that argument, and if its not sound then you disregard it

2019-01-18 04:23:07 UTC

Basically it's an "oh, you used that argument because it's emotionally manipulative."

2019-01-18 04:23:26 UTC

you can separate feelings from an argument on certain topics

2019-01-18 04:23:44 UTC

Debate doesn't allow you to disregard an argument without a paragraph of rhetorical strategies on why it's a shit argument. "That's a shitlib's argument" is much simpler.

2019-01-18 04:24:00 UTC

Lmao

2019-01-18 04:24:12 UTC

The majority of people in comment sections and chat rooms simply cannot separate their feelings from their arguments.

2019-01-18 04:24:49 UTC

I'd much rather be in an echo chamber than spend my free time reading "Trump/Russia collusion!" for the literal thousandth time.

2019-01-18 04:25:03 UTC

ok and if you disagree with that for whatever reason

2019-01-18 04:25:05 UTC

Once you know the underlying motivations and them and their ilk's arguments, I don't see why there is a point in constantly engaging with them.

2019-01-18 04:25:07 UTC

why not challenge it?

2019-01-18 04:25:22 UTC

Their arguments are all the same, extremely predictable

2019-01-18 04:25:30 UTC

I gain nothing new listening to them

2019-01-18 04:25:37 UTC

i could say the same for conservatives

2019-01-18 04:25:37 UTC

I don't learn anything

2019-01-18 04:25:45 UTC

Well I'm not a conservative

2019-01-18 04:25:51 UTC

never said you were

2019-01-18 04:25:54 UTC

Sure

2019-01-18 04:25:58 UTC

lol

2019-01-18 04:26:30 UTC

anyways tho, i just think echo chambers and circle jerks are retarded and dont offer anything productive

2019-01-18 04:26:40 UTC

I get what you mean, but conservatives and mainstream leftists hardly ever have original arguments that explain in depth why something should be as they promote

2019-01-18 04:26:54 UTC

you can learn anything talking to people who agree with you all the time

2019-01-18 04:27:01 UTC

cant*

2019-01-18 04:27:15 UTC

They provide a platform for organisation and collectivisation of an ingroup, that's useful.

2019-01-18 04:27:20 UTC

Also that's wrong

2019-01-18 04:27:37 UTC

I've learnt a lot from people who I generally agree with most of the time

2019-01-18 04:27:48 UTC

i mean the usefulness is debatable

2019-01-18 04:27:58 UTC

obv nothing wrong with having a community

2019-01-18 04:28:07 UTC

but to never branch out and talk to different people?

2019-01-18 04:28:11 UTC

not really for me i gues

2019-01-18 04:28:12 UTC

s

2019-01-18 04:28:36 UTC

What is more productive, being in a group of like-minded people steelmanning your own arguments by collecting data and giving each other advice, or exposing yourself to the same beta male arguments over and over with nothing new?

2019-01-18 04:28:49 UTC

Once you've already explored all the different political points of view and worked out what would happen if they were taken to completion, there is no point in spending your time debating those idiots.

2019-01-18 04:29:04 UTC

Exactly pgrabber lol

2019-01-18 04:29:14 UTC

the thing is you can steelman your own arguments by testing them against people who disagree with you
