They're basically an Iranian ethnic subgroup spread out over what once apon a time would have been the fringes of the old Persian borders. There are christians among them, as well as old zoroastrians and a few denonimations of Islam. Though what's most important to Erdogan and his self-ordained Sunni sultanate is the fact that *some* of the muslim bits tend to lean Shia.
