Gender Identity Disorder was what applied to trans people in the past, but under the new (DSM-5) guidelines that has changed to 'Gender Dysphoria' which only applies to people who experience 'significant distress or impairment' from their 'wrongly assigned' gender. So, under the new guidelines, not every transsexual technically qualifies as 'mentally ill'.

No but I believe that the USA psychatrists are more progressive and know more about gender studies since many of the russian psychatrists would disregard any new research about gender since sadly Russia has a lot of homophobia
