That's why the military barely has any, in all reality
I try to think of what the best types of rifles to own would be, for theoretical situations - it's kind of a fun exercise. i.e. financial collapse, invasion etc
or what the various use-cases would be
Well...a .50 typically weighs 30 pounds...My 338-378(shoots about 150ft/s faster than lapua) weighs as much as a typical hunting rifle...Both could be used way past 2000 yards
So from a military/defense standpoint those big guns are only relevant for lightly armored vehicles
right, that would make a much better combination anti-material/sniper rifle but I doubt ammo is all that available
so if someone stole an armored car and put machine guns on it, you could theoretically use it to punch through it (maybe)
338-378 ammo is $80 for a box of 20 from weatherby, and it's a niche long range round
Even then the .50 wouldnt do shit to an APC, or IFV
fuck that's expensive
Only literally cars...That are armored
Would be in trouble
Like literally all APCs are built to atleast survive 14.5mm AP rounds at 100 yards
Which is more powerful than a .50
So ya...the .50 rifles have very limited use in military applications
I'm talking like SHTF situation where some gang gets hold of an abandoned Garda armored truck and uses it as an armored assault vehicle or something along those lines
Well I mean...sure
even then I dont think the 50 would do it
I think those are designed to take .50 ?
The armored bank trucks? Na
I think there designed for 30-06 AP at point blank at most
There windshield and windows certainly isnt thick enough to stop a .50
I would think
right
I dont remember the armor level ratings...But typically the highest unless your the fucking president only guarantees protection from .308/ 7.62 NATO, or 30-06 AP...though most civilian armored cars are only built to handle 5.56/7.62×39
The armored bank cars most definitely can handle a .308/7.62 NATO tho
are the mka-1919 type shotguns any good? the turkish ones
@Duke of Mecklenburg I shut down the conversation because the 416 will reach something like 2700 yards? He is worried more about heavy machine guns then he is long range sniper rounds
That's not what were talking about
At all
Were talking about Long range shooting specifically
I scrolled up to earlier in the conversation
Should have clarified
Further than 2,700
20mm anti material rifle ftw
@Duke of Mecklenburg they might suck for long range shooting, but that doesn't make those wildcats a superior all around cartridges. Namely because there aren't similar loads like the Mk. 211 Raufoss or the SLAP. You could compare Lapua .338 against those as they are all meant for exactly the same purpose, unlike a multipurpose cartridge like the BMG.
What gave you the idea militaries choose the best option? It's always the cheapest option, very few militaries are in the spot where they have unlimited budget.
.416 isnt a wildcat
I guess I'm a retard for seeing that you can't compare an all around cartridge against a sniper cartridge. Comparing .50 BMG and .338 Lapua is equally retarded as comparing 9x19 to 9x39.
