They're single shot, no capacity

2019-04-05 19:24:48 UTC

Which is an issue, for military purposes

2019-04-05 19:26:51 UTC

maybe it's because they have .50 bmg machine guns on all kinds of things so if they can get 80-90% of the performance without rolling a new cartridge and having to fuck with the manufacturer

2019-04-05 19:28:07 UTC

though I dunno if the .50 is 80-90% of the performance

2019-04-05 19:28:21 UTC

The .50 Barretts and McMillans have a very niche military role anyway...Pretty much just Anti-material...

2019-04-05 19:28:53 UTC

The .338 Lapua pretty much gets you were you need to go, in terms of sniping

2019-04-05 19:29:26 UTC

That's why the military barely has any, in all reality

2019-04-05 19:30:53 UTC

I try to think of what the best types of rifles to own would be, for theoretical situations - it's kind of a fun exercise. i.e. financial collapse, invasion etc

2019-04-05 19:31:06 UTC

or what the various use-cases would be

2019-04-05 19:32:43 UTC

Well...a .50 typically weighs 30 pounds...My 338-378(shoots about 150ft/s faster than lapua) weighs as much as a typical hunting rifle...Both could be used way past 2000 yards

2019-04-05 19:33:18 UTC

So from a military/defense standpoint those big guns are only relevant for lightly armored vehicles

2019-04-05 19:33:45 UTC

right, that would make a much better combination anti-material/sniper rifle but I doubt ammo is all that available

2019-04-05 19:34:25 UTC

so if someone stole an armored car and put machine guns on it, you could theoretically use it to punch through it (maybe)

2019-04-05 19:34:31 UTC

338-378 ammo is $80 for a box of 20 from weatherby, and it's a niche long range round

2019-04-05 19:35:20 UTC

Even then the .50 wouldnt do shit to an APC, or IFV

2019-04-05 19:35:26 UTC

fuck that's expensive

2019-04-05 19:35:37 UTC

Only literally cars...That are armored

2019-04-05 19:35:49 UTC

Would be in trouble

2019-04-05 19:36:42 UTC

Like literally all APCs are built to atleast survive 14.5mm AP rounds at 100 yards

2019-04-05 19:36:57 UTC

Which is more powerful than a .50

2019-04-05 19:38:21 UTC

So ya...the .50 rifles have very limited use in military applications

2019-04-05 19:40:38 UTC

I'm talking like SHTF situation where some gang gets hold of an abandoned Garda armored truck and uses it as an armored assault vehicle or something along those lines

2019-04-05 19:41:01 UTC

Well I mean...sure

2019-04-05 19:41:02 UTC

even then I dont think the 50 would do it

2019-04-05 19:41:11 UTC

I think those are designed to take .50 ?

2019-04-05 19:41:35 UTC

The armored bank trucks? Na

2019-04-05 19:41:46 UTC

yea, armored bank trucks

2019-04-05 19:42:02 UTC

I think there designed for 30-06 AP at point blank at most

2019-04-05 19:42:42 UTC

There windshield and windows certainly isnt thick enough to stop a .50

2019-04-05 19:42:48 UTC

I would think

2019-04-05 19:42:53 UTC

right

2019-04-05 19:44:33 UTC

I dont remember the armor level ratings...But typically the highest unless your the fucking president only guarantees protection from .308/ 7.62 NATO, or 30-06 AP...though most civilian armored cars are only built to handle 5.56/7.62×39

2019-04-05 19:46:04 UTC

The armored bank cars most definitely can handle a .308/7.62 NATO tho

2019-04-05 20:01:29 UTC

are the mka-1919 type shotguns any good? the turkish ones

2019-04-05 21:16:20 UTC

@Duke of Mecklenburg I shut down the conversation because the 416 will reach something like 2700 yards? He is worried more about heavy machine guns then he is long range sniper rounds

2019-04-05 21:17:23 UTC

That's not what were talking about

2019-04-05 21:17:26 UTC

At all

2019-04-05 21:17:45 UTC

Were talking about Long range shooting specifically

2019-04-05 21:17:57 UTC

@nutsnax everyone has their own preference.

2019-04-05 21:18:28 UTC

I scrolled up to earlier in the conversation

2019-04-05 21:18:40 UTC

Should have clarified
