I'm not "all lefties are x all righties are y". But I guess I'd just appreciate it if there was a sort of brotherhood between all European ethnicities. We gotta stick together somehow, otherwise we will forever dance to the tune of some foreign world power (at least the US has much shared culture and history with us, but it's still annoying to play 2nd fiddle after the amerimutts).
We just have to keep the ~~Germans~~ bureaucrats from gobbling every bit of power up, and make it in such a way that it will be ruled for the wellbeing of OUR people, not for money or economic interests.

I'd agree with all that there are more important things than GDP, i'd measure the success of a society on the quality of life of the majority of individuals. Furthermore quality of life is not simply material wealth, its becoming clear that people have equally important psychological needs such as a sense of purpose in order to be happy.

From my (American) perspective there's no basic desire to lord it over y'all or anything. It's the trying to lecture us on how we should run the world when we're doing all the heavy lifting that pisses us off. I mean we got most of the oceans, most of the money, and damn near all the guns doing things our way. So when some dipshit (and I include our local dipshits in thee DNC) says we should do things *more like Europe* we kinda wish we would have let the Soviets have you.....

Yeah the whole American Hegemony is kind of a comedy of errors. There's a great book on it *The Accidental Superpower* by Peter Zeihan.

At heart I am pretty isolationist. It's just that, looking at a global system and how much of the world depends on it. And that it's a system we made. You still want to pull out but you realize that doing so is not a simple task. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Regardless we likely are going to pull out. Without the Cold War there's no national interest for us to maintain the system. *how* we pull out matters I'm thinking about the mess after the colonial era here. Don't want to do that again.....

@EnderOctanus That's not the problem. The shipping lanes don't really matter to us. The dirty little secret is the Us doesn't profit from them. Imports are only 12% of our GDP and 2/3rds of our imports are N. American. In a lot of other places imports are how they eat.

It is stable because nobody else us willing to spend what we do, OR, they admit that America > China.

My point was that if we don't profit over the system we have little motive to maintain it. That doesn't really hurt us but it could make the world a very messy place.

Wat is that worth? Military allies who don't have militaries? Trading partners that don't have much to sell us? I'm not saying it's inevitable I'm just saying it is plausible.
