i tried looking into the mongol bows but i got conflicting results, most of what i saw was over 100 lb, and some as high as 180 lb. but i didnt do enough research to confirm

2019-09-30 16:14:27 UTC

@gary underwood It was actually more like 70lbs

2019-09-30 16:14:51 UTC

Those numbers came from people ignoring that the materials degraded over centuries of not being used

2019-09-30 16:15:13 UTC

i saw one thing that said they carried two bows, and one was stronger

2019-09-30 16:15:51 UTC

180lb would make them nearly twice as strong as english archers

2019-09-30 16:15:55 UTC

seems unlikely

2019-09-30 16:16:08 UTC

chinks not exactly big guys

2019-09-30 16:16:15 UTC

if those numbers came from degraded materials then why would they be less? i dont get it

2019-09-30 16:17:00 UTC

past a certain point dont recurv bows become easier to hold?

2019-09-30 16:17:50 UTC

we need to ban the competition so only communism can win

2019-09-30 16:17:50 UTC

tony fucking blair

2019-09-30 16:18:56 UTC

Degraded materials stiffen, properly maintained one will be an easier draw. There are differences in shooting methodology which would allow the mongols to use fairly heavy draw bows though. Thumb rings help a lot and move the limit from grip to arm strength.

2019-09-30 16:19:58 UTC

```The Mongol bow is not as large and long as the English one, but it is vastly more powerful. The draw weight of an English longbow averages around 70-80 pounds, whereas the Old Mongol bow had a pull that, according to George Vernadsky, averaged at around 166 pounds. Chambers states that the pull varied from 100 to 160 pounds. This seeming discrepancy certainly reflects the fact that draw weight varied with the strength of the user, and with what use the bow had been made for. As could be expected, there was a considerable difference in shooting range. Whereas the English longbow could shoot at distances up to 250 yards or around 228 meters, the Mongol counterpart can hit its target at 350 yards or 320 meters and, if the archer is well trained for the task, even beyond that. ```
2019-09-30 16:20:23 UTC
that's what one thing i found
2019-09-30 16:21:19 UTC
yeah i dont know, every source i look at gives a different figure
2019-09-30 16:21:36 UTC
the average is around 100 though
2019-09-30 16:39:11 UTC
what took him so long to realize this?
2019-09-30 16:42:23 UTC
