2018-05-13 11:24:59 UTC

Lol

2018-05-13 11:25:57 UTC

He is here

2018-05-13 11:26:34 UTC

2018-05-13 11:26:40 UTC

2018-05-13 11:28:23 UTC

Brb

2018-05-13 11:28:32 UTC

probably has this server muted

2018-05-13 11:47:40 UTC

I don't agree with Tommy's choice to deplatform Ali dawah from the day of freedom march.

2018-05-13 11:48:31 UTC

deplatforming anyone is censorship. It comes across as unprofessional for defenders of free speech to want to silence specific people.

2018-05-13 11:48:38 UTC

You start to sound no better than the radical left.

2018-05-13 11:50:24 UTC

Does this mean mexicans cant enjoy Taco tuesdays?

2018-05-13 12:01:47 UTC

i don't necessarily think people should be grateful when their culture is appropriated from, but cultural appropriation is basically a non-issue imo

2018-05-13 12:01:54 UTC

at best it's probably only tangential to real issues

2018-05-13 12:02:27 UTC

culture is a set of ideas, you do not own them, so they cannot be "appropriated". They are shared and spread naturally, through human interaction.

2018-05-13 12:02:32 UTC

ie the only representation of a minority culture within the mainstream is crude due to the marginalization of said culture, but in this case i don't think cultural appropriation the causal factor behind said marginalization

2018-05-13 12:03:02 UTC

you can feel offended all you want, but that just makes you look like a complete and utter fool

2018-05-13 12:03:40 UTC

cultural appropriation is a specific type of cultural exchange though where you take aspects from a culture in a superficial manner

2018-05-13 12:03:50 UTC

no, it is nonsense

2018-05-13 12:03:58 UTC

ie people wearing the indian dot thing as a fashion statement

and not understanding whatever significance it has to dot heads

2018-05-13 12:05:05 UTC

a complete non-issue. If anyone takes offense at something like that, they are free to dry their eyes, and grow a pair.

2018-05-13 12:05:50 UTC

i think when it comes to immigrant cultures it's a definite non-issue because assimilation should be the focus with immigrants

2018-05-13 12:07:15 UTC

They do not have to lose all of their cultural identity, but if their culture is mostly harmful, superstitious nonsense, then assimilation is preferable to 'integration'.

2018-05-13 12:07:18 UTC

when it comes to aboriginal peoples like with native americans i can understand why it might sting for a marginalized and indigenous group to see their culture absorbed in a superficial manner by the dominant culture though here i think the real problem is the marginalization and not people wearing feather bonnets because they think they look cool or whatever

2018-05-13 12:08:08 UTC

I can understand why they might feel such emotion as well, but I hold little sympathy for it.

2018-05-13 12:11:01 UTC

They do not own the ideas, customs and behaviors of the culture they were born into. It is tribalist nonsense to feel such attachment in the first place. Especially when it comes to superficial stuff such as clothing and food.

2018-05-13 12:11:18 UTC

i hold sympathy for it i just don't think the response should be for petite-bourgeois university students to castigate people for doing it

2018-05-13 12:11:36 UTC

I can certainly agree with that

2018-05-13 12:13:45 UTC

also i'm not sure that most actual native americans care anyways

2018-05-13 12:14:06 UTC

most of them probably don't

2018-05-13 12:14:38 UTC

iirc the vast majority of native americans were cool with that one football mascot or whatever people were angry about

2018-05-13 12:15:56 UTC

there was that thing they parodied in South Park, with the Red Skins, or whatever.

2018-05-13 12:16:49 UTC

pretty sure most of the outrage came from non-native americans, where that was concerned, but I could be wrong.

2018-05-13 12:37:12 UTC

noobs

2018-05-13 12:45:03 UTC

Go away, Jew.

2018-05-13 13:14:50 UTC

tfw your muslim grandma calls you her little lamb

2018-05-13 13:16:15 UTC

@Mal
Yeah, actually, the majority of people that scream "cultural appropriation" are people that don't belong to said culture.

Over here, I saw an African women getting shit for "cultural appropriation" for people that never even have been to Africa

2018-05-13 13:20:19 UTC

my girlfriend brought me Japanese garb to wear for a Japanese cultural festival held in Europe. She'd probably be branded a heretic cultural-betrayer by Korean-Americans <:pepe_smug:378719408341909506>

2018-05-13 13:22:25 UTC

Yeah lol
