@P0ke in an actual military setting, yes tear gas would be illegal as it would fall under the category of chemical weapons, however, like Counter Terrorism Units, Police aren't held to the same standards as military personnel

Military also aren't allowed to use hollow points but they are legal for civilians. Being illegal for military isn't a good point.

Military is supposed to fight the other side, and kill if necessary. Police are not supposed to fight and kill the opposition, so they use non-lethal alternatives to try to avoid having to go to lethal force...

saying they didnt get violent isnt a good argument. one side of politics says they are never violent. if you can get a good example where people werent violent at all, were completely peaceful, and there was no violent activity going on in the area around the time police decided to use tear gas, Ill concede and condemn that use of tear gas. But when shit is going down, people are getting violent, and large crowds are forming... the police are more than justified in using less than lethal means to disperse the crowds to prevent more violence and potentially deadly interactions.

they are even more justified when verbal requests to disperse are ignored, and *the requests sometimes even invite people to get more riled up at the cops.
