That's why the EC exists.

2020-11-22 17:15:06 UTC

That's why state governments exist too

2020-11-22 17:15:22 UTC

That's also the reason for limiting federal power.

2020-11-22 17:15:28 UTC

Mhm

2020-11-22 17:15:42 UTC

Like I said, it is a shortcut problem

2020-11-22 17:16:49 UTC

Progressives are espousing universal healthcare, but I think it is a bargaining ploy. Nobody thinks it will really happen. Even though I think that the discussion as to whether access to healthcare is a privilege or a right. Even so, with ACA they started with the public option and ended up with a neutered attempt at filling the healthcare gap. This time they are threatening more, but hoping to end up with a public option. I personally don't see a problem with the public option. I think it fosters competition. The private sector are always claiming to be infinitely more efficient than govt... Let's prove it.

2020-11-22 17:17:10 UTC

I disagree that it is a bargaining ploy at all

2020-11-22 17:17:25 UTC

And I'm not even saying I'm against it

2020-11-22 17:17:54 UTC

I just gave it as an example of something states can do but jump to the federal legislature and eye the SC to get their way across the entire country

2020-11-22 17:17:58 UTC

Shortcut

2020-11-22 17:19:10 UTC

A public option would work wonderful. It would put private out of business. Then it would become corrupt and ineffecient.

2020-11-22 17:19:24 UTC

Not entirely true.

2020-11-22 17:19:31 UTC

Not what happened in many places.

2020-11-22 17:19:51 UTC

This is my thought as well. That the voting system itself was providing information to some nefarious actors.

2020-11-22 17:20:01 UTC

There are plenty of examples of public/private healthcare systems that coexist long-term.

2020-11-22 17:20:15 UTC

Our country has a healthcare problem

2020-11-22 17:20:21 UTC

But not because of public or private

2020-11-22 17:20:30 UTC

It's just problems in the laws

2020-11-22 17:20:42 UTC

Just Google shit like "certificate of need"

2020-11-22 17:21:07 UTC

It doesn't matter who pays for it, the underlying system is so bad that we will always have problems till we solve those

2020-11-22 17:21:11 UTC

I would have to know which example and examine it.

2020-11-22 17:21:16 UTC

Canada.

2020-11-22 17:21:25 UTC

Agreed... other countries with public healthcare have a robust supplemental insurance business for those that want more.

2020-11-22 17:21:30 UTC

They have both a private and public system.

2020-11-22 17:21:32 UTC

If we solve those problems, then both public or private have a chance at working

2020-11-22 17:21:44 UTC

Canada doesn't have a private option.

2020-11-22 17:21:48 UTC

Yes it does.

2020-11-22 17:21:56 UTC

Canada's drugs are capped

2020-11-22 17:22:02 UTC

Subsidized by you

2020-11-22 17:22:25 UTC

Prevented from import (and thus free market) by our government (perhaps until recently)

2020-11-22 17:22:44 UTC

There are some good NPR podcasts on this subject

2020-11-22 17:22:48 UTC

Private is subsidized by public by requests.

2020-11-22 17:22:55 UTC

The entire thing is so fd up it takes hours to untangle

2020-11-22 17:23:33 UTC

Canadians may be happy with what they have; I don't want it.

2020-11-22 17:23:33 UTC

@GregInHouston2, you just advanced to level 5!

2020-11-22 17:23:53 UTC

I'm just explaining that it's a private/public option that coexists.

2020-11-22 17:24:01 UTC

As an example.

2020-11-22 17:24:23 UTC

Because you said that public just takes over everything and crushes private.

2020-11-22 17:25:16 UTC

Honestly, I don't buy it. But I have no time to look into how it does and does not work.

2020-11-22 17:25:25 UTC

It's funny... I don't think I have seen any other issue that has been so unifying in this group. Everyone agrees healthcare needs to be fixed. Somehow.

2020-11-22 17:26:09 UTC

Pros: Lesser costs to the public for general healthcare.
Cons: Longer wait times for diagnostics and procedures.
