I visited a town in Virginia that is as it was at the time of George Washington. Guns were everywhere. Houses had them as decorations in most rooms. Cannons were all over the town. All privately owned. Fact is machine guns had been invented and a few had them. The second amendment actually states that militas should have the power of arms not the Government. Militias were totally private. Nowadays they have been made illegal for the most part.
