@The Enlightened Shepherd The difference between serbs and croats really plastifies the difference between being ruled by germanics and roaches. Even up to today the average iq of croats is 9 points higher than serbs. The ottomans probably recruited the smartest, strongest and bravest boys for the jannissaries, making them usefeul for themselves while at the same time weakening the genetic stock of the populations that they controled in the balkans.

there were Croats who lived under Ottomans, most notably those in Herzegovina and Posavina regions of Bosnia

and Serbs who lived under Austria, most notably Vojvodina and Krajina regions

as far as Ottoman influence goes, the most dramatic effects of it was complete lack of infrastructural and urban development

as well as low levels of literacy

Ottoman Empire had no desire to develop literacy, especially of Christian subjects who were second grade subjects, and who if they wished to pursue education, had to go to monasteries

As for infrastrucutre, vast majority of Christian subjects were peasants in rural regions, with few Christians remaining traders who lived in towns and had somewhat higher status

However, during Balkan wars, this peasant Christian population proved to be determiningly better, more agile and more persistent in war than town dwelling Muslims

P.S Croats were technically ruled by a Hungarian rather than German nobility, but the latter were obviously in chage of organizing the state

P.P.S The so called "brain drain" is the most severe problem and cause of the declining intelligence in pretty much the entire Eastern region
