Even up to today the average iq of croats is 9 points higher than serbs. The ottomans probably recruited the smartest, strongest and bravest boys for the jannissaries, making them usefeul for themselves while at the same time weakening the genetic stock of the populations that they controled in the balkans.

Ottoman Empire had no desire to develop literacy, especially of Christian subjects who were second grade subjects, and who if they wished to pursue education, had to go to monasteries
