I believe you should work up the ladder to achieve success and earn more money. Universal income kinda eliminates that purpose doesnt it?

2019-09-12 20:06:18 UTC

I don't need the government to become my daddy. We should be able to be independently sufficient in order to make due pay possible.

2019-09-12 20:30:41 UTC

UBI covers your most basic needs, not success

2019-09-12 20:54:13 UTC

People cant usually achieve success when they're starving or homeless

2019-09-12 20:56:09 UTC

They're still very well able to

2019-09-12 20:56:33 UTC

And the conditions weren't present back then for anything of the sort to happen

2019-09-12 20:56:49 UTC

We still have to have a good safety net for them

2019-09-12 21:06:54 UTC

Job automation is another consideration for UBI

2019-09-13 14:41:12 UTC

@Dr.Cosby Also, 10% VAT isn't that much. Remember, Europe pays 20% VAT

2019-09-13 14:41:17 UTC

10% is nothing

2019-09-13 14:42:16 UTC

Also, welfare has the problem that is causes people on welfare to fear finding a job (since they're scared that they'll be worse off by finding a job as that welfare will be taken)

2019-09-13 15:39:03 UTC

Right but UBI woudn't cut off because you got a job

2019-09-13 15:39:18 UTC

That would just create a resentment among the working class and ultimately fail

2019-09-13 22:25:23 UTC

Why a resentment among the working class?

2019-09-13 23:31:57 UTC

Because if you're working and not even better off than somebody who isn't working, that would build resentment

2019-09-13 23:31:57 UTC

GG @Soup Can Sam, you just advanced to level 5!

2019-09-14 01:21:48 UTC

but if you're working hard, *you will be better off than them*

2019-09-14 01:22:05 UTC

also welfare is typically *less remuneration than even a minimum wage job*

2019-09-14 01:22:10 UTC

and that is *by design*

2019-09-14 01:22:17 UTC

to ensure incentives are aligned properly

2019-09-14 01:28:21 UTC

OK say you're getting 1000 a month from UBI but if you started a part time minimum wage job, and I'm talking a state with high minimum wage like maryland at 10.10 and lets be generous and say you get around 30 hours a week. You're working and only making about 212 dollars more a month than the person sitting on their ass doing nothing.

2019-09-14 01:30:52 UTC

Now if you apply that to the federal minimum wage you'd need to work at minimum wage almost full time in order to break a thousand a month

2019-09-14 01:31:16 UTC

To make the same amount of money as somebody literally doing nothing

2019-09-14 01:31:41 UTC

So you would continue giving out UBI to the person with the job to prevent that from happening

2019-09-14 03:34:15 UTC

i live in a country where the minimum wage is around $22/hr lmao

2019-09-14 03:34:24 UTC

and welfare is anywhere between $4-8/hr

2019-09-14 03:34:36 UTC

UBI wouldnt get us to $22/hr

2019-09-14 03:34:54 UTC

so in our case, the incentives are aligned properly

2019-09-14 03:35:00 UTC

but also

2019-09-14 03:35:07 UTC

i thought you meant *welfare* payments

2019-09-14 03:35:09 UTC

not UBI

2019-09-14 03:41:04 UTC

australia does not have a population of 330 million

2019-09-14 03:41:19 UTC

millions of illegals who take jobs for way less than the minimum wage are NOT going to australia

2019-09-14 03:41:31 UTC

well actually

2019-09-14 03:41:34 UTC

we had a boat problem

2019-09-14 03:41:40 UTC

people migrate to indonesia

2019-09-14 03:41:45 UTC

then come on boats to australia

2019-09-14 03:42:01 UTC

so yea we had a lot of immigrants who took low wage jobs

2019-09-14 03:42:08 UTC

idk about taking less than the min wage tho

2019-09-14 03:42:32 UTC

you dont have 1 million coming per year in caravans ready to storm your border

2019-09-14 03:42:39 UTC
