part of that "get educated or you are failure" mentality found in a lot of them
view things like farming and garbage collecting as bad.
which i find very ironic, given that should either of those jobs just stop being done, things get very uncivilized very quickly
Menial jobs ypu mean
If they made farming more machine based
like we could live with less CEOs, but farmers and garbage men?
Or automated it and had you handle the machines that stigmas gona move elsewhere
They just percieve those jobs as simple for the uneducated
Anyway japan does a really good job at exporting their culture so it kinda feels silly to move there for it.
I mean their work culture sucks so bad that their currently best selling works of fiction are either based in highschool, scifi/fantasy or isekai.
I had a japanese exchange student who spent a month in nz who was shocked at how relaxed everyone was and dreaded going back to japan.
yeah, my family did homestay alot and we mostly had asians (mostly korean).
all of them really didn't want to go back
I see someone mentioned China. They have a very long historical struggle with religious institutions. That is why they are only 7% religious(last i checked). Vietnam is also an exception because many people are actually religious (or at least superstitious) but they have to practice it in secret due to harsh state laws
China is the only one that doesn’t fit this pattern simply because of it’s exclusive history of religious conflict
Um, what religious conflict?
China never really developed a widespread internal religion as much as it did defining phiosophies
Confucius, Lao Tse, Sun Tse, lot of teachers that had followings.
I think he might mean the suppression of religion in China since the Communists?
Buddhism came from the south and got some following
Maybe not
The Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward notwithstanding because everyone died during those, the CCP has permitted Christians to practice as long as it is the state approved version of Catholicism
Likewise they permit Islam but not any flavor with influence from outside
And they allow Tibet their religion under the Panchen Lama whom they control
So again I'm not sure where the conflict comes from unless you consider their distaste for movements they cannot control
That's...not really permitting it
It's outlawing everything that's not some state religioin
Such as evangelical missionaries with their liberal democracy leanings
Tibet might be a different story, might be some history there
The west is irrational when we expect China to be like us
China is an alien culture. We should think of it like a first contact scenario.
Western philosophy with it's culmination being constitutional liberalist democracy has no foundation in China
China was always the needs of the many outweigh that of the individual
You need look no further than how family name comes first is China whereas it comes last for Euro-Americans
The Mandate of Heaven was to keep the rivers from flooding and direct the masses to immense public works
Everyone subsumed for a common goal
I dunno, man.
Probably cause instead of relligion they opt for teachings.
I had pasta with my pal from China.
Confucism is big there.
I think 90% of the issue we have had with China has been less the CCP and more 5000 years of history that is very different and distinct from Mesopotamian/Egyptian/Greco/Roman
Isolationist policy.
