Video of Uber crash

2018-03-22 14:14:20 UTC

Honestly.. I'm not sure how anyone would have avoided that idiot.

2018-03-22 17:12:46 UTC

By using the brakes

2018-03-22 17:18:58 UTC

Swerving into the wrong lane

2018-03-22 17:23:44 UTC

Not crossing the street without looking?

2018-03-22 17:33:55 UTC

I still take using the brakes.

2018-03-22 17:35:03 UTC

Probably would not have prevented the accident but would have lowered the chances of the accident being deadly.

2018-03-22 17:36:15 UTC

Yeah, that is something people keep forgetting.

2018-03-22 17:36:45 UTC

Getting hit at 40 mph vs getting hit by a decelerating object going 20 mph.

2018-03-22 18:22:59 UTC

thats assuming your reaction time warrants it,

Like they said in the comments, the video is probably darker than the human eye can make out so humans would probably have seen better but still, this is not even entirely the cars fault

2018-03-22 18:24:22 UTC

Yeah.

2018-03-22 18:24:38 UTC

Just another thing that happened that shouldn't have.

2018-03-22 18:24:58 UTC

Any one thing could have minimized or prevented it, but it all just lined up just right.

2018-03-22 18:30:30 UTC

so, lets ban cars, its safer not to have them clearly

2018-03-22 18:31:09 UTC

true

2018-03-22 18:31:14 UTC

Let's ban humans

2018-03-22 18:31:27 UTC

They cause all troubles

2018-03-22 18:35:47 UTC

Ban motorcycles too.

2018-03-22 18:35:49 UTC

I think hindsight 20/20 says that that person would have gotten hit pretty bad either way, in the shadows, etc.. I'm not sure how much a human behind the wheel would have changed an awful lot.. maybe a bit, maybe none.. And this coming from someone that's not really keep on autonomous driving anyway, because I think its so new technology that it will be years if not decades to reach mass working

2018-03-22 18:35:54 UTC

We'll just invent teleportation.

2018-03-22 18:36:38 UTC

Yeah, I do think there is this push for automated driving when our current infrastructure isn't ready for it yet.

2018-03-22 18:36:51 UTC

just don't let uber of all companies try stuff like that, would help.

2018-03-22 18:39:00 UTC

I guess 'prevent' was a bad choice of word, but at the same time it is kind of possible. Like, if the street were more well-lit, if she didn't walk across the street at that exact moment or just looked, if the guy was paying attention and not on his phone, etc.

2018-03-22 18:39:28 UTC

Although, on the other hand, what is the point of cars that drive themselves if you have to pay attention to your surroundings anyway?

2018-03-22 18:39:39 UTC

If you make something "idiot proof" the universe will just invent a better idiot

2018-03-22 18:39:42 UTC

One of the points is to be a passenger and be able to do other things while on the road.

2018-03-22 18:40:44 UTC

Other than GPS purposes because you don't know your way around an area, having to pay attention to your surroundings and being alert on the road in a self-driving car is pointless. There's no reason for it at that point.

2018-03-22 18:41:01 UTC

and even then

2018-03-22 18:41:05 UTC

gps is based on moving satellites

2018-03-22 18:41:10 UTC

and vehicles

2018-03-22 18:41:16 UTC

so a mis caclulation is quite possible

2018-03-22 18:41:26 UTC

GPS is also inaccurate at a certain scale

2018-03-22 18:41:29 UTC

yes

2018-03-22 18:41:42 UTC

especially at the "this cna hurt a human if wrong" scale

2018-03-22 18:41:51 UTC

Not even taking into account how frequently the maps need to be updated.

2018-03-22 18:42:03 UTC

I was even going to say that

2018-03-22 18:42:27 UTC

but the pedestrian wasn't exactly paying attention themselves, it just becomes natural selection anyway at that point

2018-03-22 18:43:11 UTC

Which was my very first point, yeah lol.
"Not crossing the street without looking?"

2018-03-22 18:43:52 UTC

guess god didn't have a plan for her

2018-03-22 19:24:47 UTC

the point of self driving cars is for them to have sensors that pick up things that a human driver would miss and act accordingly which makes traffic safer. or you could be uber and have no clue what you are doing.

2018-03-22 21:06:57 UTC

i don't quite understand why people are so against Uber testing out self driving cars. Is it just because they are a shitty company? because while i believe that, i don't see how uber is any different than say a start up. You'd have to look at the money and structure of that part of the company to say they are not really equipped from making that
