no these are foreigners that own the properties (mainly chinese) and dont want the hassle involved with renting out property in the UK
so many homes get left empty
which is crazy... i mean ok tenants have looooads of rights here over the landlord.. but like.. I have a tiny 2bed flat - if I rented it out, the going rate here is £1200 a month
is there no like, abandonment laws? like if you haven't been at your property for x-years its no longer yours? like, why are they paying for these properties and leaving them empty

It has to do with the closed nature of the Chinese economy and the difficulty in converting the yuan to foreign currency. Similar problems exist in Canada. Mainland Chinese buy property essentially as a way of avoiding laws against foreign investment.
also loads of people speculate on london property - the population of england is rising so fast - and most people are coming to london... USA has just 33people per sq km - china only has 140 people per sq km - whereas england has 415 people per sq km and thats only rising
and in the US and china ... you might be able to retire or move out to cheaper surroundings/suburbs .. whereas people cant do that here - in fact my place is outside main london - and is more expensive than some parts of london

well thats not unexpected.. the tory argument is that they brought in 850 refugees from safe european countries and it turned out only 8 of them were from syria, so the decision was made to put the resources to help people who really needed it
but hey, I only bought my tiny 2bed flat this year... so I hope they dont mess it up and the property prices drop or Ill be in negative equity with £300k debt 😛
