thinking about that compelled speech law in Canada, if that precedent has now been set... if a white supremacist somehow got into power, they could compel people to use the n-word whenever referring to a black person, punishable by fine if they don't :/
and people have already said they think its a good law and fine to do... blows my miind
(obviously if a white supremacist got into power, this would probably be the least of most peoples worries)
😛
@Timcast there is still value in the work, even if the term journalism may no longer hold the same meaning, the actual work is still needed. I have a running theory that as the news media struggles to find a place in the internet age in which they are no longer the gate keepers of "the facts", as you pointed out, their standards have slipped (or their lack of standards at times are being exposed). This is leading to a greater number of people starting to distrust it, while the remaining people split along the divide. However, as the left keeps making fools of itself, and the right keeps being the right, people are gonna start looking more and more for a reputable news source.
There is still trust in the media, the journalists now are exploiting the trust the media spent decades earning from the populace. Just happens that we all now realise that journalism has always been tainted with bias and misinfo.
Also... A good instance of how freedom of the press can be akward to handle. You got multiple sites with their own "side" of the fight, of course you will only report stuff to keep your readers happy.
the idea that many people still believe at least one side of the major media is telling them the honest truth is incredibly depressing
Finding an unbiased news outlet today is like trying to find a needle in a haystack
Especially from the Legacy media
the problem isint people who want to lie and change the throughts of the world to their own narritive. the problem is people who want the honest truth when all they know is dominated by 2nd hand and 3rd hand sources
has the media ever really told the truth? probably only when the truth was more valuible than fiction
i mean, i have never really trusted the media
People's trust in the media, especially Legacy media is dropping fast since we have the internet
You can cross-reference different sources with the click of a button
the internet is no more honest than the legacy media, it just has more honest people in it
Honest means, I do not lose anything from stating the truth.
how do you know what the truth is that anyone tells you?
even people who trust the current highly bias left leaning sites, given how, with each passing day, the list of stuff you can do to get kicked out of "the left" is growing, more and more will lose that trust as the remaining people get more and more fickle.
the internet probably also has more people looking to exploit and manipulate the opinions of others for some grand design than legacy media
legacy media seems to be mostly in it for the money
"Downvotes and unfriending"
For-profit tend to do that, AG
well of course they do
at the end of the day
the money in legacy media will become more and more what political interests what the less the mass's attention and money it has
it's a business to them
Indeed
its business to the internet too
It's sad that Twitter has become a place where you have to walk on eggshells to avoid getting blocked.
I didn't even have to do anything to get hit with a blocklist
blocked?
I don't fear blocked
I fear being banned
you should try to get as blocked as much as you posibly can, the deeper into the echo chamber your opponents get the less they know
Once someone blocks you, the conversation ends. Where do you go from there?
war or segrigation
I don't block unless someone's earned the total asshole achievement
how does one earn that
Constantly spin and twist your words, try emotional manipulation/blackmail, strawmanning, +++
