no, it needs to be focused around trying to measure skill correctly
nothing is static in our universe. Things are always changing.
what is perfect for measuring something now, might not be perfect tomorrow.
the system is "perfect" if it can recognize when it has stopped work and self-corrects.
much like science
like bacteria randomly mutating to overcome antibiotics
nothing is 100%, but you can aim for 100%. but it will always be asymptotic
Skill is not the only factor employers look for, and for good reason. Further there's not always room for correction
The closer that AI brings us to perfectly meritocratic hiring, the less employers seem to want it.
Most utopian design looks better from a distance
I'm talking about actual cases. Tim has talked about actual cases like Amazon.
Right, that's what I mean though
As we achieve the means to put some of these plans into action they look less and less inviting
It failed because Amazon wants ideoogical hiring, not objectively meritocratic hiring.
There's that too yeah
And tbh they're 100% free to do that, or should be in any case
Just like I'm free to never touch prime or aws again
If Amazon is free to hire ideologically, businesses should be free to conduct their businesses ideologically.
I think so, too.
But my understanding is we have government legislation to stop exactly that.
There's no getting around the anti-meritocratic aspect of legislation that stops the hiring of white males.
And demands that the business provides universal service for some groups of people.
Actually depending on your state and your business you can totally deny service to whoever you want
I suppose states can let you ignore federal laws.
But I'm not sure they'd let you ignore the civil rights act.
There was also the gay cakes case
I agree with allowing a business to deny service on its own terms unless there's an antitrust issue.
Baking seems to be a pretty competitive industry so I couldn't care less if a baker wants to turn down gay cake business.
NYC news conference re: bomb threat <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdyhBb1Wj3w> (starts at ~45 min mark)
Officials declined to answer whether or not the devices were genuine explosives or meant for intimidation only.
This is my shocked face.
they probably just did keyword searches
styx is close i think. maybe not spot on but close/
it really wouldn't be a surprise if it was the left who started the whole bomb scare
I didn't even listen to this video until now, and I knew exactly what he was going to say.
I called this yesterday, I think before this video came out.
